FLFeedlots! Let’s talk about it.
I had an incredible opportunity to visit one of the most renowned and respected feedlots known the west coast, @harrisranchfeeding a few days ago with a group of culinary experts and sustainability professionals.
This group got to see first hand how well these cattle are cared for on the day-to-day and how beef gets on the menu.
One thing I loved about Harris is the grounds are strategically designed on a slope to allow natural flow of water and waste. The manure moved out is then transferred to a methane digester which helps maintain environmental stewardship while also using it as fuel to power other machines around the facility. Hello sustainability!
Additionally, there is shade provided in each pen to keep cows comfortable in the California heat. That was something I loved seeing.
When we got off the tour bus, the cows came RUNNING to our group! Cows are curious creatures. They were very excited to have some new guests over to see if we had any good snacks and scratches for them.
You could hardly hear a “ball” (that funny noise they make when they are hungry or have a lot to say) which tells me they are absolutely comfortable and happy in their space.
They are not “stuffed” in pens. Rather, they cozy up together because they are herd animals and it’s a natural instinct. I stole this analogy from my friend, @hangrygfchick who is our Beef dietician on staff at @californiabeefcouncil : “cows in a feedlot are like a bunch of high school girls gossiping in a bathroom. They like being close together.”
If you’ve ever felt funny about the word “feedlot”, I suggest you visit one someday if you ever have the opportunity. Or follow @harrisranchfeeding or even @5riverscattle , both feedlots I’ve visited and have mad respect for!
Yes, I sell beef direct to consumer. And I have huge pride in that. But, I also know I cannot feed EVERYONE my beef. It’s a pleasure and an honor to do so. Feedlots are another way we get larger quantities of safe, healthy and nutritious BEEF into our grocery stores and into our communities.
This is our we feed our growing population, our country and our world the BEST beef on earth.

As cattle feeders, our sole purpose is nourishing the nation.
And as our nation grows, this becomes an even greater responsibility.
A feedlot is the final stage in beef production and of a beef animal's life.
Before coming into the feedlot, cattle spend the majority of their lives grazing the nation’s rangeland.
Here we feed cattle a high quality diet to produce what you know as, beef.
Every morning before daylight, feed truck drivers begin delivering feed to cattle.
At first light, pen riders make their way through every pen of cattle, studying them for signs of illness and providing means to bring them back to health with antibiotics.
In the mill, rations are made fresh daily. Rations that have been formulated for these animals nutritional needs and customized to their stage in the finishing period.
Cattle come into the feedlot averaging 750 lbs. and will spend about 200 days on feed before they are finished.
Cattle are harvested for beef, as well as both edible and inedible by products that are entwined into every part of our daily lives.
Feeding our nation is something I am very proud to be part of. And I am even prouder to show you how we get it done.

HEShipping cattle from Idaho to Canada requires us to give them an ear tattoo, indicating they are coming from the United States, and to have a veterinarian get a blood sample to confirm all of the heifers (females) were given a “bangs” (brucellosis) vaccine (along with other requirements). It was a busy day, but luckily, we had some great help to get through about 250 head of cattle!

MIHard to believe I made this work 12 years ago. It still shocks me.
Feedlots (2012-2013) depicts industrial cattle farms across the US, taken from publicly accessible satellite imaging providers. At the time, unbeknownst to me, agricultural gagging laws in many states prohibited these sites from being photographed without permission from their landowners. Some say it was a way to protect American consumers from knowing what they were eating.
97% of all beef consumed by Americans came from feedlots, which accelerate the life and death cycle of cattle to maximise profit and yield. Traditionally, farming methods would take 5 years to raise a cow to its mature weight for slaughter. Feedlots reduce that time to 18 months.
