ETIf you’ve ever felt lonely as an adult, what I’m about to say next is the most important thing you’ll read today:
You might be lonely, but you are never alone. I read an article that said your 20s are some of the loneliest years of your life.
If you moved away from home, went to college, moved cities, aren’t yet married, don’t have kids, and your parents live in a city halfway across the country getting older - this post is for you.
Here’s how you cope with and address loneliness as an adult:
1. Recognize that being lonely is often the result of lacking connection or feeling seen on a regular basis. Address this, and address the feeling of loneliness.
2. Spend time reconnecting with people from your past. Old best friends, anyone who you genuinely feel like yourself around. This is like therapy for the soul.
3. See if you can deepen existing friendships. You already have a network of people who love you. If you’ve felt like some of your friendships lack depth, be the one makes the effort to deepen them. Share vulnerable stories, your real feelings, and talk about your greatest fears. Open the door then give them a fair chance to walk through it.
4. Learn how to self soothe. Recognize that loneliness stems from our fear of being alone. This is a primal instinct because our species evolved by depending on others. Getting left behind was a death sentence. Realize that this instinct no longer serves us in modern society. You are not in danger. Being alone is not a dangerous thing. You will be okay, even if you’re alone for a while. I promise.
