Fetal Ejection Reflex (FER) is one of the most powerful, instinctive physiological responses in birth it’s something many women have never even been told about.
🌟 What Is the Fetal Ejection Reflex?
The fetal ejection reflex is an involuntary, intense reflex where the body pushes the baby out on its own, without conscious effort.
It happens when a birthing woman feels safe, undisturbed, and deeply relaxed usually in late labor or transition.
Instead of “pushing,” the body begins doing it automatically with strong, fast, uncontrollable expulsive contractions.
🌸 What It Feels Like
Women often describe FER as:
* “My body took over.”
* “I wasn’t pushing my body was.”
* “It felt like a powerful wave that I couldn’t stop.”
The contractions become:
* Extremely strong
* Close back to back
* Productive
* And often painless compared to forced pushing because you’re working with your body, not against it
🧠 Why It Happens
The reflex is triggered by:
* High levels of oxytocin
* A protected, calm environment (dim lights, privacy, no stress)
* Minimal interruption or coaching
* A fully dilated cervix
* Baby descending into the birth canal
When the neocortex (the thinking brain) is quiet, the primal brain takes over — that’s where the reflex arises.
🩺 What Interferes With FER
The reflex can be blocked by:
* Fear or anxiety
* Bright lights
* People talking to you, touching you, or giving instructions
* Monitoring that restricts movement
* Being told when/how to push
* Interventions like epidurals or induction (not always, but often)
* Epidural you can become numb & not know how to push leading to episiotomies or worse

There comes a point during an unmedicated, physiologic birth that you probably won’t be able to NOT push. Your body takes over as you surrender to the process, and pushing happens involuntarily.
It’s called the fetal ejection reflex. I didn’t believe it was a real thing until it happened to me!
There was no counting to 10, no breath holding, no thought about it. My body pushed without my mind.

KAKay’s happy tears! 🥹😭 backstory ::: Kay hasn’t been able to feel any kicks or movements from bug yet! She’s at 16 weeks, and felt her first flutters at 13 weeks when she was pregnant with Kinsley! Kay got the idea to use our little doppler to listen for bug’s heartbeat and hopefully she would hear some movements also! I went to storage to look for the doppler, but couldn’t find it, so we ordered another and it finally came in! Kay started feeling around for bug, and suddenly was hearing little pops! It was bug kicking and moving around. As she held still, bug kicked several more times, and then Kay finally found little bugs heartbeat. It was so special to be able to hear bug, and it made kay cry happy tears. 🥹 Bug kicked a few more times to say hi, and then we let her go back and rest so she can keep growing big and strong! ❤️ I can’t wait for bug to be born! I’m sure that she will be so precious! 🥹❤️

ASAt around 14 weeks of pregnancy, you might see or hear about tiny rhythmic “hiccup-like” or “jerking” movements during an ultrasound. 💓
Believe it or not, this is a normal and healthy part of development.
By this stage, the baby’s central nervous system is rapidly forming connections that control muscles and reflexes. One of the early reflexes involves the diaphragm—the muscle used for breathing. Even though the baby isn’t breathing air yet, their body is already practicing the motions.
These rhythmic movements are commonly fetal hiccups. They happen when the diaphragm contracts in a regular pattern, triggered by developing brainstem reflexes. It’s essentially the nervous system “testing the wiring” between the brain and the breathing muscles.
✨ What this means:
• The nervous system is becoming more coordinated
• Reflex pathways are developing
• The baby is practicing breathing motions for life after birth
Many parents don’t feel fetal movement until 16–20 weeks, so these tiny hiccup-like rhythms are usually seen during an ultrasound.
Pregnancy is full of small milestones happening quietly behind the scenes—and sometimes even a tiny hiccup can be part of the process. 🤍
