Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome (FHS) A rare neurological and behavioral disorder where cats show episodes of extreme skin sensitivity, muscle twitching, and sudden behavioral changes. It’s sometimes called “rolling skin syndrome.” ⸻ Causes (not fully understood): • Abnormal electrical activity in the brain (like a mild seizure disorder) • Stress or anxiety • Skin irritation or spinal pain • Compulsive behavior or OCD tendencies • In some cases, idiopathic (no clear cause) ⸻ Clinical Signs: • Rippling or twitching of the skin (especially on the back) • Sudden biting or licking of the tail, back, or sides • Dilated pupils, agitation, or running wildly • Vocalization during episodes • Sometimes self-inflicted wounds from excessive grooming Episodes often last seconds to minutes and may be triggered by touch or stress. ⸻ Diagnosis: There’s no single test for FHS — it’s diagnosed by ruling out other causes such as: • Skin allergies or parasites • Spinal pain or arthritis • Neurological disorders Tests may include: • Skin scraping, X-rays, or blood work • Neurological exam ⸻ Treatment: • Environmental management: reduce stress, provide routine and enrichment • Medication (as prescribed by vet): • Anticonvulsants: Gabapentin or Phenobarbital • Anti-anxiety: Fluoxetine or Clomipramine • Pain relief: if spinal discomfort is suspected • Avoid overstimulation and reduce triggers such as rough petting or sudden noises .

Feline hyperesthesia syndrome (FHS)—also called twitchy cat syndrome—is a poorly understood neuromuscular and behavioral disorder characterized by episodic hypersensitivity along the lumbosacral region. Affected cats show sudden rippling of the dorsal skin, tail twitching, intense grooming or biting of the flank, dilated pupils, and abrupt bursts of agitation or running. The pathophysiology is multifactorial and not fully elucidated, but current evidence suggests an interplay between abnormal sensory nerve conduction, neuropathic pain, dysfunctional cortical or limbic activity (similar to focal seizures), and heightened stress or anxiety responses. Episodes may be triggered by tactile stimulation or occur spontaneously, typically lasting seconds to minutes. Diagnosis is clinical and requires exclusion of dermatologic diseases, spinal pain, or seizure disorders. Management involves environmental stress reduction, behavioral modification, analgesics (e.g., gabapentin), and sometimes anticonvulsants or anxiolytics depending on the suspected underlying mechanism. We recently found out that Cleo has FHS (Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome) symptoms. This is the first time I’m sharing about her health, and it hasn’t been easy to watch her go through those strange episodes. Fortunately, with the help of medication, she’s now doing much better. A big thank you to my friend Alana @tabbygirlroo , who shared her experiences and gave me suggestions when I first noticed Cleo’s symptoms. It really helped me decide what to do 🖤 I’m sharing this because I know other cat parents might notice similar behaviors in their cats and feel worried, just like I did. Trust your instincts, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to seek help. #cat #blackcat #fyp #fhs #pethealth #neurovet #twitchycat #rollingskinsyndrome #felinehealth #felinehyperesthesia #felinehyperesthesiasyndrome

Feline hyperesthesia syndrome (FHS), or "twitchy cat syndrome," is a complex, poorly understood condition featuring extreme skin sensitivity, usually on the back, causing rippling skin, dilated pupils, and erratic behavior. The amazing vet at @thecatclinic.goldcoast has really helped us today after a previous visit to the hospital and spoken to other vet clinics (this is not a dig at other vets, it's to express how hard it has been to get some answers) This is a rare thing and often in stressed cats but has been seen in all cats. Alfie is the least stressed cat I've ever known. This is a process of elimination and we are taking things step by step. We've done some baseline bloods today and taking some other steps over the course of the next month to see how things go before we look at other tests. I had never heard of this before. Alfie is a healthy happy kitten but we want to ensure he is comfortable. We would love to know if you have any experience with this 😘

Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome is is still not fully understood. Some veterinary professionals believe it is a nerve disorder. Others believe it is purely a manifestation of obsessive-compulsive disorder. OCD behaviors include chasing shadows like Lily loves to do. She has always chased her shadow on the ground, in a playful, not fearful nature, and recently she’s been chasing wall shadows at nigh time. Since this is stimulating for her brain and fun, we have created Lily’s shadow puppet theater 🥰 We love our girl and all of her many quirks. FHS and special needs kitties need extra patience and understanding and can thrive in the right environment ❤️ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #felinehyperesthesiasyndrome #felinehyperesthesia #ocd #fhscat #specialneedscats #specialneedscat #specialneeds #adoptdontshop

Josephine’s FHS has been really active the past week or so. I videoed the last three-minutes of an episode last night that was close to 10-minutes long. I’m pretty sure it’s her longest episode ever. She does take daily gabapentin for this condition. Neither her vet nor I really know why the FHS is acting up so dramatically at this time, other than possibly being related to what we believe is arthritis pain (which Josephine has started on medication for, as well). Like most chronic conditions, this waxes and wanes. I’m hoping it will quiet down for her soon. I hate seeing her go through these episodes. Have questions? Causes of feline hyperesthesia syndrome are usually considered dermatological (skin problems), neurological (problems with the nervous system), or psychological (mental health problems). Each of these may have different triggers for FHS episodes It may be found more frequently in Abyssinian, Burmese, Persian, and Siamese cats VC - Haus von fluffenstein on yt Follow @vetdrugs_ #cat #cats #catsofinstagram #catlover #vetdrugs_

Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome (FHS), also known as “rolling skin disease” or “twitchy cat syndrome,” is a poorly understood neurological and behavioral condition in cats. It is characterized by episodes of abnormal skin sensitivity, unusual behaviors, and signs of discomfort that can range from mild to severe. Although relatively uncommon, FHS can significantly affect a cat’s quality of life and poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges for veterinarians. Definition and Etiology FHS is a multifactorial disorder with no single confirmed cause. It is generally considered a combination of neurological, dermatological, and behavioral abnormalities. Some researchers suggest that it may be related to seizure-like activity in the brain, while others link it to obsessive-compulsive disorders or heightened sensitivity of the skin and nerves. Genetic predisposition may also play a role, as certain breeds such as Siamese, Burmese, and Abyssinian cats appear more commonly affected. Potential contributing factors include: Neurological dysfunction (possible focal seizures) Behavioral disorders such as anxiety or compulsive grooming Skin conditions like allergies or parasites Environmental stressors Clinical Signs The hallmark of FHS is episodes of exaggerated sensitivity along the cat’s back, particularly in the lumbar region. These episodes may occur spontaneously or be triggered by touch. Common clinical signs include: Rippling or rolling of the skin along the back Sudden bursts of frantic activity, such as running or jumping Excessive grooming, biting, or licking, especially at the tail base Dilated pupils and signs of agitation Vocalization or apparent hallucination-like behavior (e.g., chasing invisible objects) Tail chasing or self-mutilation in severe cases Episodes are usually brief, lasting seconds to minutes, but can recur frequently. #veterinarymedicine #petsagram #vetlife

💊🐈‍⬛ Is your cat living with FHS? (Watch the FULL episode footage on my “reels” section for more info on what to look for! Watching Osquinn develop hyperesthesia syndrome has been quite the journey. At first, I didn’t know what was going on with him, and though he was just being a crazy lil kitten. But as soon as I heard the phrase “rolling skin disorder” I immediately did research to learn more about this neurological disorder, I realized that he was experiencing some of the classic symptoms, like skin rippling, tail chasing, sudden mood changes, and even attacking the walls as if he could see something that’s not there… As he grew out of kittenhood, I also noticed him slow down and get clumsier as if he is in pain. It’s been tough to see him go through this, but I’m grateful for the support of my vet, since this condition is apparently so poorly understood that some vets don’t even believe in it. If you think your cat might have this condition, don’t hesitate to seek help for your furry friend. I’ve heard great things about gabapentin, an anticonvulsant and nerve pain medication that has shown great effects in many cats with FHS! I’m really excited to have Osquinn give it a try because I can just tell how disturbed he can become by his symptoms and imagine how much more comfortable he could be without them! #felinehyperesthesiasyndrome #cathealth #catsofinstagram #furbaby #catlove #petcare #catlover #catlife #catstagram #catbehavior #catproblems #catowners #petparent #petproblems #pethealth #felinehealth #petcommunity #catcommunity #catbehaviorproblems #catbehaviorist #cattherapy #catwellness #catmentalhealth #catawareness #catadvice #catcaretips

Poor Winks was diagnosed with FHS (Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome) FHS is an episodic disorder that can have a myriad of symptoms including tail chasing, over grooming, tail biting, tail flickering and sudden muscle spasms causing cats to jolt and can often lead to self mutilation. It’s hard to determine an exact cause, but this can be triggered by skin diseases, psychological disorders and or neurological disorders. Some of the symptoms that Winks exhibited were the tail constantly flickering back & forth, over grooming/ripping his hair out, scratching his neck constantly, and sudden, uncontrollable jolts In his body. Sometimes these symptoms were subtle & infrequent, and alone would not be alarming, but knowing him now, I know what is normal for him and what is not. Because FHS can be a secondary issue, ruling out and treating any possible larger causes is key. In Wink’s case, we know he had mange when he first came into the vet which can trigger FHS and or exacerbate it. Blood work was all normal with the exception of his FIV diagnosis so for now we are medicating Winks to help alleviate the symptoms. 1) Gabapentin to control any pain and to also help alleviate stress/anxiety, and 2) Prozac to help retrain his brain from the compulsive behavior he is experiencing. He has been on gabapentin for a while but it was not enough but we’re confident with these two meds, he should start to feel much better! In the future, we can wean him off to see if his body has reset, but if not, he will need to be on meds for life. Despite all this, Winks continues to be super duper loving and clingy and still loves to give hugs. At night, he crawls so close onto me it’s like he is trying to morph into me 😭 Send him some healing vibes please! And feel free to drop any of your experiences/suggestions with FHS in the comments! 🫶 #CatsOfInstagram #FHSCat #AdoptDontShop

If your cat’s skin ripples like a wave, suddenly runs around, or bites its tail — don’t ignore it. ⚠️🐾 This could be Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome (FHS), also known as “twitchy cat disease.” --- 🧠 What is happening? FHS is a condition where the skin becomes extremely sensitive, usually along the back. It may be linked to neurological issues, stress, or even seizure-like activity. --- ⚠️ Common signs: • Rippling or rolling skin • Sudden bursts of running • Tail chasing or biting • Dilated pupils • Loud vocalisation • Over-grooming (sometimes causing wounds) --- 💔 Why it matters: Many pet parents think it’s “just weird cat behaviour”… but frequent episodes can mean your cat is in discomfort or distress. --- ✔️ What you should do: • Reduce stress and environmental triggers • Avoid touching during episodes • Get a proper vet evaluation • Treatment may include behavioural management + medication --- 🧠 As a vet: Your cat isn’t being dramatic… they might be trying to tell you something is wrong. --- Early recognition = better control. 🐾 Comment “CAT” if you’ve ever noticed this behaviour. 👇 #cats #cathealth #vet #petcare #reelkarofeelkaro
