People who play drums often become good at math too, because the two are deeply connected especially when you practice them together. I learned to practice polyrhythms without getting confused by using simple math. Instead of memorizing patterns one by one, I separated my coordination and used calculation to see the entire rhythm as one complete picture. Here’s another example: counting rhythms based on the Golden Ratio can feel confusing at first. So instead, I practiced calculating the value of pi repeatedly and looked for the Golden Ratio in nature whenever I went out. Over time, I was able to play the Fibonacci sequence on the drums.
