Am I critical of other farmers? No actually, but I am critical of a system that dictates to them and tells them how to farm and then doesn't pay them for it. Constantly told to get bigger and produce more for what? #organic #farm365 #irishfarming #farmlife

Regenerative farming isn’t guesswork - it’s science, and when you start makes a big difference. Getting product on in the right season helps break down trash, free up nutrients, and set the farm up properly for spring growth. Done at the wrong time, you can slow yourself down before you even get going. Are you starting your soil programme at the right time of year, or just when it suits the schedule?

Hearing directly from farmers about what SFI means to them is why I’m determined to go further. I want more farmers to benefit from SFI. The next iteration is simpler, fairer, and designed with farmers in mind.

‼️ Out Of The Rut podcast is out now ‼️ Episode 1 is with Dr Stephanie Fitzgerald, clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist. We discuss ideas that hit home in farming and far beyond: changing job roles, or even businesses, won’t magically make you feel better if you’re carrying the same beliefs, pressures and inherited culture with you. Sometimes you look back and realise money’s been spent in the wrong place. That’s farming - the important thing is knowing when to change direction and start fixing the soil instead of throwing more at the same problem. Once the soil improves, everything else usually follows. What’s stopping you from getting a soil test done on your farm?

Oh well, might as well upset as many people as possible. Language is very important, people with not very much get benefits, people with a lot get subsidies and incentives. Until “sustainable” practices are incorporated into farm systems and farm business models they will not become the convention. How many people have said they will plough up their field margins if the stewardship schemes end? ALOT. Also, by incorporating sustainable practices in with conventional, will improve farm productivity and so profitability. I’m saying this from experience, actual real life experience. Anyway…I have never been eligible for subsidies and when I do I won’t take them. The NHS saved my life, the council gave me the opportunity to start again and the government provided me with the means to get on the housing ladder. All I had to do in return was work hard. I intend to repay my debt to society, to our country and this little four acres is the opportunity to do so.

Organic doesn’t automatically mean good farming. You can follow the rules and still run a poor system. The real goal is building a farm that actually works - healthy soil, healthy pasture, profitable outcomes. 🌱

Our final Grounded ‘Live’ episode of the season is this Wednesday! 4th March, 7pm - 8.30pm A quick reminder to join us for ‘It won’t work on our farm! Debunking the myths and discussing the truth about regenerative farming’. With guest speakers: James Johnson: Mallard Grange Farm, Ripon. The farm is run by James and farther Charles. They have recently adopted regenerative and nature friendly techniques, to farm more sustainably. Wheat, barley, beans and oil seed rape are grown coupled with approximately 140 Hereford/Angus cross suckler cows and calves, a flock of 400 breeding ewes and 230 free range hens. Matt Griffin: Neidpath Farms, Scottish Borders. At Neidpath, the focus is on building a farming system that works with nature while remaining financially resilient. Since 2021, farm manager Matt has led the transition away from high-input methods towards a model that prioritises soil health, biodiversity and long-term business sustainability. Neidpath Farms is a large upland livestock enterprise spanning around 2,500 acres across four farms. Our speakers will tackle the biggest misconceptions surrounding regenerative farming head-on. From fears about yield drops and costs, to doubts about scalability and carbon sequestration, we’ll explore the evidence and share practical experiences from farmers who have been through the transition.
