1. CINEMATOGRAPHY You as the lead vision for the film are responsible for the cinematography. Learn how to write a coherent and neat shot list (or story boards). Study composition and shot choice. Learn how to make quick determinations on where a close up and a long shot should be placed in your scenes. The cinematographer is responsible for logistics of getting those shots done but they need your vision to know what they are shooting. 2. COMMUNICATION This is your film. No one knows it better than you so be confident in your opinions and preferences on set. If you need to communicate ideas to your crew or cast keep them as short and precise as possible so it always clear where your vision is. It's a lot harder to take instructions from someone who's stumbling over their words and ranting for minutes on end. 3. ACTORS Understanding your relationship with actors is one of the biggest parts of the job. A big mistake I see a lot of rookie directors making is telling actors how to act. This is wrong and honestly counterproductive. THEY ARE ACTORS. You hired them, they know what they're doing. They need instructions on their characters and the scene not how to replicate emotions. If you're not getting the performance you want there is usually a deeper issue with character motivation not the ability of the performer. You do not need to walk them through their job, you wouldn't do that to your DP or gaffer. 4. EXPERT PROBLEM SOLVER Filmmaking and things going wrong go hand and hand. So when things eventually do go to shit remember that this is your time to shine. Prepare for moments where dozens of people will have no idea how to solve an issue and they'll turn and look at you for solutions. You cannot quit in this moment or wrap for the day because your project depends on it. YOU NEED TO FIND A SOLUTION. The only way to get better at this problem solving is to experience every side of a set at least once. Work on other people projects in a variety of positions and inevitably you'll face the issues of those roles. Then when it's time to be on your own set you'll have seen these things coming. It's truly a super power to have experience. 5. HAVE FUN ON SET Yep.

On one of our shoots, someone pointed out how a scene looked perfectly continuous on screen, same wardrobe, same props, same actor movements, even though we had filmed parts of it days apart. It’s one of those small filmmaking details audiences rarely notice, but on set it takes a lot of coordination to make it work. That’s where the Script Supervisor, often called the continuity person, becomes essential. Their role is to track every detail during production so that scenes remain consistent across different takes and shooting days. From wardrobe and props to actor movements and dialogue delivery, they help ensure that when the film reaches the editing room, everything flows naturally. In many ways, they act as an extra set of eyes for the director and a bridge to the editor, documenting what happens in every take so the story stays visually and narratively coherent. It’s one of those roles that quietly holds the puzzle together, something you really start to appreciate once you’ve spent time on set. Next time you’re watching a film or behind-the-scenes footage, have you ever noticed the small details that continuity teams are keeping track of? People always say “study films if you want to be a better filmmaker.” But what does that actually mean? 1. Watch it once without thinking like a director. Just experience it. No pausing. No notes. Let it affect you. 2. Watch it again and start asking questions. Why did that scene work? Why did that moment feel tense? Why did the edit hit there? Break it apart slowly. 3. Don’t analyze the whole movie at once. Pick one scene. Who wants what? What’s in the way? Where does the power shift? 4. Study one layer at a time. Maybe today you focus on directing choices. Another day on camera movement. Another on sound or performance. Film production has many moving parts. Learn them separately. 5. Don’t just copy. Understand the intention behind the choices. That’s how you grow as a filmmaker and eventually develop your own voice as a film director.
