They train like bodybuilders instead of training for work capacity, endurance, and real firefighter conditioning. The academy doesn’t test how much you bench. It tests: • running • stair climbs • strength endurance • mental toughness This is the exact training structure I used to graduate #1 out of 100 recruits. I turned it into an 8-week firefighter prep program so recruits can show up ready instead of just hoping they survive. I’ve gotten this question the most when it comes to people asking for advice. “What are some workouts I can do to prepare for the Fire academy?” For starters the most important things to focus on is cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, strength, & agility. Running and HIIT style workouts are my favorite way to combine both cardio and muscular endurance. When putting together a workout program I recommend doing 3 zone 2 runs a week and 2 speed workouts. Zone 2 means running at a pace where you can keep a conversation. Speed workouts can be anything from sprint workouts to Fartlek etc. For strength and size there were a few different styles of training that worked for me. Hypertrophy - 8-10 rep range Strength - 6-8 rep range 5x5 method My favorite split was always the Push Pull Legs split. Don’t forget your Calisthenics though. Mastering your body weight movements is key. Figure out a way to incorporate your body weight movements throughout your workout plan. For agility and mobility, I’d recommend consistently stretching before & after your workouts, and also on your rest days. A lot of people think the academy is where they’ll get in shape or begin their training. They couldn’t be more wrong. Show up in shape and ready. This is real life, not Hollywood, you will be blind in most interior fires! You will get stuck in wires and fall through things. Train like your life depends on it, because it does… Thanks for sharing: @east_hamptonengine2 Engine 2 recently got to train on the brand new mask confidence course that was donated to our Wainscott training facility. This maze was donated by Brian Stanis and the crew at @hamptons_grounds_care. The maze was designed to challenge a firefighter’s skills and abilities while at the same time building mask and pack confidence. Some features are a collapsing floor, entanglement and collapse section as well as a breach and reduced profile wall. Every crew member went through walls breaching them with proper tooling #fireman_323 #firefighter
