It took a whole year of work to enjoy this glow 🥹☀️ This is the most magical DIY project I’ve ever taken on aaand undoubtedly the longest and hardest too 😅 When we moved into our house this was an old slab of concrete that served zero purpose but I always dreamt of it as an old world European garden bursting with veggies. I finished just in time for the end of the growing season so now I’m patiently waiting for spring to see what I can grow. I’ve owned my home for one year, and here are the ✨unsexy✨ things I swear by doing to keep my home well-maintained ⬇️ ➡️ 1. Observe your home! Look around. Make a mental map or take photos of how everything looks. If you know how your house looks on a normal day, chances are you’ll be able to tell whenever there’s something broken, leaking, or missing. (This is how I found out we had a mouse… I didn’t recall seeing mouse poop by our washing machine 😳) ➡️ 2. Change your air filter every 1-2 months. You’d be surprised at how fast they clog up. 💨 ➡️ 3. Approach every issue like a puzzle. Things WILL break in your home. It’s important not to panic, but instead approach problems like a puzzle. How would you fix it if you can’t get a pro to help right away? 🧩🤔 ➡️ 4. Be diligent about taking out the trash. Trash left inside for too long attracts critters, and no one wants that 🤢 ➡️ 5. Get dirty! Don’t be afraid to DIY things around your house (I learned how to install 31 outlets in my house for the first time ever!) Ask a friend or search for tutorials on YouTube. Turns out even the crustiest, splintered, weathered wood can be salvaged with the right products and A LOT of elbow grease. For those of you who are new here- here you have it 😊 The story behind my mom’s house. After 15 years of living away from family, the distance started to be too much. My mom needs more help caring for my dad...and my kids miss having their “Nonna” in their lives on a consistent basis. So my mom finally made the decision to relocate from the east coast (where our roots are) to Chicago- where my husband and I currently live with our three young children. She bought a cute little 1950’s house down the street from us that was the perfect size and in the perfect location- without even looking at it in person. She was really hoping for a move-in ready home—something that didn’t need any work whatsoever. But the location of this house was everything to her so she opted to settle for less than her ideal home (yet again). I could tell she felt a little disheartened at the thought of fixing up another place…. So I told her I’d help “fix it up” so that she could have a home she felt good walking into. We planned to take it on together once she moved out here… but that won’t be for another few weeks as she fixes up and gets ready to list her other home of over 38 years. It all started with buying a fixer upper, hands on learning, and building equity in the process while others were paying my loan (and funding my future investments).
