CAWe all know flashcards and the Feynman technique are classics when it comes to memorising a ton of facts. But as a medical student, I’ve been on a mission to find faster, smarter ways to study so that I can remember more in less time📚
Here are 3 underrated techniques that have actually helped me: ⬇️
1️⃣Chunking
Your brain’s working memory can only hold around 4–7 pieces of info at once (Miller’s Law). So instead of memorising random facts, group them by theme.
Example:
Instead of 6 separate symptoms, group them into systems (theme):
→ Neurological: confusion, headache
→ GI: nausea, vomiting
→ Cardio: tachycardia, hypotension
Chunking reduces overload and makes recall so much easier.
2️⃣Sensation Tagging
Attach your info to what you see, hear, or feel—this adds a sensory cue to boost recall.🦻
Example:
Eight = Ear (they both start with E).
So cranial nerve VIII (Eight) controls hearing (Ear) and balance.
3️⃣Elaboration
Ask yourself “Why?” and “How does this connect to what I already know?” When you elaborate, you activate more brain regions and create multiple memory pathways. The deeper the processing, the better the retention.🧠

⚪️How: use physical flashcards, or digital apps such as anki and quizlet. Spaced repetition by studying them every day and eventually spacing out the time between studying

⚪️Why: active recall and spaced repetition combined are scientifically proven to improve memory of a topic
⚪️This method is best for: visual and kinesthetic learners.

𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗛𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗦 - while pre-made cards are useful, making the cards themselves are beneficial because you’re learning through your own words. When you’re writing out your cards, make sure there is one question per card and break down larger concepts into multiple cards.
𝗗𝗜𝗚𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗩𝗦. 𝗣𝗔𝗣𝗘𝗥 - it is inconclusive whether one is better than the other, so choose which you prefer. Keep in mind that digital may be more convenient in terms of spaced repetitions & for larger amounts of content to get the best out of your studying.
𝗗𝗜𝗔𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗠𝗦 & 𝗠𝗡𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗖𝗦 - try to incorporate these into your cards to improve your memory via visual & auditory cues.
𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘- instead of just cycling through each flashcard, organize your flashcards based on your confidence level. Use three piles - (1) fully correct (2) needs practice (3) don’t know at all
