👉🏻 6 things to remember 👇🏻 Threading a serger feels intimidating at first—but it doesn’t have to be scary. A lot of it is muscle memory and clear basic steps. If you remember these basics, you’ll avoid most of the common mistakes that lead to frustration. 1. Always thread in order—upper looper, lower looper, then needles 2. Never clip at the needle—pull thread down through tension discs 3. Test on scraps before starting your project 4. The lower looper is tricky—don’t rush it 5. Make small tension checks as you go 6. Keep a threading diagram nearby (it’s your best friend!) The best part? My 21-page Hello Serger Mini Handbook has an entire page dedicated to threading—so you don’t have to rely on memory or late-night googling anymore + it’s free 😉 🙌 💛 Type LOOP in the comments and I’ll send you the link to join my Serger Loop newsletter + your free Hello Serger Mini Handbook. 👏 The overcast foot! 👏 Don’t have an overlocker but still want a lovely neat seam finish? 👀✨ Let me introduce you to the overcast foot… It guides your zigzag stitch right along the edge of the fabric, wrapping the threads neatly around the raw edge for a much cleaner, more professional finish. And here’s its superpower… ✨ There’s a little bar on the foot that helps maintain the stitch tension as you sew, which prevents tunnelling and keeps everything sitting nice and flat. Such a simple swap, but it makes a big difference when you’re finishing seams on a regular sewing machine. Save this post for next time you want that tidy zigzag finish 💛🧵

🌀 Not sure how to finish an overlock seam in the round? It’s very common to be sewing “in the round” with a serger (you see it in hems, collars or cuffs). So here’s my favorite method for a clean finish! 🧵 The secret lies in sewing over the beginning of the seam by a couple of centimeters (with a lot of caution so you don’t cut into the fabric or seam), and then pivoting the fabric away to create a thread tail which you can then hide with the help of a needle. It does take a bit of patience and practice to not cut into your new seam and to line seams up perfectly but after a few tries, it’ll become second nature! 💡 An even easier and safer method is to disengage your knife if you can! It’s not a feature I can access during sewing on my Brother overlock, but it exists on other brands like Babylock! 🤔 Which method are you using? Please let me know if you’re doing something different and share in the comments! #learntosew #sewinglessons #sewinghacks — 🌸 Hey, I’m Anaïs, a passionate sewist and pattern designer. You might not want to hear this… but it’s something I need you to listen to! This is forever my number 1 tip for people that want to improve their sewing. And I get it, it’s boring, it’s not the most glamorous part of the process, but it makes SUCH a difference to the end result. No matter what I’m making! It’s one of the few things I do take the extra time to do at every stage of my project. Some things are not worth cutting corners on! What do YOU think about this? #sewing #sewingtips #sewsewsew

An overlocker will seam the left needle at roughly 6mm allowance, so if using a pattern with a 1cm (or more) seam allowance, remember to cut off the excess with the knife for a clean finish of the loops and to ensure the finished garment is the correct size still. Do you have any handy overlocker serger tips?

We’re not saying Bias Binding is always the FASTEST finish, but is a worthwhile one! Why spend all that time on a make to have a flappy facing you can’t stand or a double fold hem that took aaaaaaages and is still a bit wonky? If your stitches look uneven when you go from thick seams to thinner fabric…it’s not your tension. It’s the height change 📏 In this video, I’m stepping from 14 layers down to 2 layers — and that’s a dramatic example on purpose. This isn’t a common everyday seam…I’m showing you an extreme contrast so you can clearly see what happens. When your serger suddenly drops from very thick to much thinner fabric, the presser foot tilts. That tilt affects stitch formation. Here’s the fix 💡 Fold a small piece of tear-away stabilizer and place it behind the thick area as you stitch so that it’s the same height of the empty space under the presser foot. This works like a hump jumper by leveling the foot—but it’s safer. • If your needle hits it, no damage 🪡 • If your blade trims it, no damage ✂️ • If it stitches in, it tears away cleanly Simple. Smart. Beginner-friendly. This is the kind of tip that prevents frustration before it even starts. The kind of tips I share with my students. 💬 Comment LOOP and I’ll send you the link to my FREE Hello Serger Mini Handbook—with cheat sheets, beginner tips, and QR codes that take you straight to video support that actually makes sense.
