In the last 10 years I have seen a lot. I have ridden MANY horses. And my biggest takeaway is : it is supposed to be easy.

AVWhat an incredible week of training at the US base for Kolora stud. Beautiful humans, riders, horses, dogs and facilities made for a very special time. We’d like to share some of the flatwork training and progression through the week. The three horses we will show have just completed a 4 week spell in preparation for the winter circuit. We started in the long reigns with the progressive addition of clicker training and equikinetics, and then transitioning to under saddle. Introducing the baby of the group, the beautiful imported mare Deligle’s Gosanna ridden by @mia.showjumping. We hope you enjoy, and stay tuned for the next horses over the coming days…..

EQI believe that simplicity for riders and simplicity for training horses goes a long way. When working with a horse that has difficulty with flying lead changes, I always fall back on a few basics I believe every horse should know before I approach the work to improve a flying change. Here are the basics I believe a horse should successfully understand: (1) Turn on the forehand; (2) Haunches-in at the walk; (3) Prompt and responsive canter departures; (4) Holding a counter canter and the ability to change the bend throughout the counter canter.
It’s all about reaction to your leg and control of the haunches. Timing and a prompt reaction from the horse is important. I find that falling back on these basic exercises is of tremendous benefit to horse and rider when working to improve a flying change. I go into further detail and key ingredients required to produce a successful lead change in this month’s free training video. Watch the full video — link in bio!
