FLA wave of new homeowners, along with private landlords and the Genesee County Land Bank Authority, are fixing up dilapidated homes to live in, rent, or sell. The spruced-up homes are raising property values and slowly replacing the roughly 24,000 vacant properties across the city. The investments have landed Flint’s homeownership rate three percentage points above the national average of 65.7%.

DALeadership is about being able to talk to everyone, not just people your age, your background, or your circle. It’s about connecting with the youth, respecting our elders, and understanding the concerns of every race and every neighborhood. A true leader meets people where they are and listens before speaking.
Recently, I attended a neighborhood meeting where one of the residents shared concerns about motor bikers riding loudly through the neighborhood, especially late at night. I could hear the frustration, and I understood why it matters. Families deserve peace in their homes, and our seniors deserve quiet nights.
But I also believe in talking to all sides. Many of these riders are young people who just want a place to ride, something to do, and somewhere they feel they belong. Instead of just punishing the problem, we should look for solutions that create balance.
One solution I believe in is creating a designated space where motor bikers can ride safely and legally. Set reasonable riding hours, not too early and not too late, with a clear curfew that respects the neighborhood. If those rules aren’t followed, there should be accountability, fines, and if necessary, bikes being taken until responsibility is shown.
This idea could also create opportunities. A designated riding space could create jobs for maintenance, security, and operations. It could also bring in revenue through memberships, giving riders a structured and responsible way to enjoy what they love while helping support the program financially.
There are always ways to deal with problems, but we have to be willing to sit down, talk to all sides, and work toward solutions that protect our neighborhoods while also guiding our youth in the right direction.
Leadership is not about choosing sides. It’s about bringing sides together.

MIFlint officials are relaunching a campaign to crackdown on illegal dumping in the city. The city is offering cash rewards for information that leads to an arrest for illegal dumping.
Mayor Sheldon Neeley held a news conference Friday, in front of a burned out northside house, filled with hundreds of old tires.
Neeley said the crackdown is aimed at individuals, and companies that treat the city of Flint like a dumping ground.
“You are not going to be allowed to do business in this city anymore,” Neeley said of businesses caught dumping in the city.
