Symptoms developed abruptly Friday morning:
🔹Fever 104
🔸Bad headache
🔹Fatigue
🔸Body aches
I tested him that evening and he was negative, but I was suspicious (based on symptoms & exposures) so I tested again the next morning.
Positive for Flu A.
➡️ WHAT WE DID:
- Tylenol / Ibuprofen as needed for fever & pain
- Electrolyte liquids, popsicles, jello, cereal, smoothies
- Sequestered him in a separate room with blanket, fluids, & screentime. Its hard to keep the toddler away from him so this was the easiest way to separate “sick” from “well”
- Debated between antivirals vs doing nothing. He was MISERABLE so went ahead & treated beginning on Saturday. Chose Xofluza since it is one-time dose with fewer side effects and not foul-tasting but I was surprised by how expensive it was (even with the coupon)

- For the rest of us: Took preventive Xofluza / Tamiflu (for 3yo, since too young for Xofluza)
- Wiping down surfaces, washing hands, & masking as we could (admittedly, this last one was very difficult to sustain)
➡️ Clinical course:
- Sunday: improved color & appetite, but still tired, lower fever (101-102), sore throat, headache, neck pain, new cough
- Monday: still tired, no fever, still mild headache, sore throat, neck pain, cough ongoing
- Tuesday: turning a corner but still pale and tired, mild headache but cough better
➡️ Red flags I have been watching for:
- Getting worse again
- Difficulty breathing
- Dehydration
- Severe pain that doesn’t improve with meds
- Excessive fatigue, seeming “out of it”

AULast week my son came home from school early because he wasn’t feeling well. What started out mild picked up pretty quickly, and the days unfolded like this:
Day 1: big drop in energy, vomiting, and a low-grade fever.
Day 2: energy slightly better, vomiting gone, lingering stomach discomfort, and more consistent fevers — but he was tolerating water, crackers, and popsicles.
Day 3: energy dipped again and fevers peaked (which was scary), but his appetite stayed steady — he even asked for pizza.
Day 4: fevers essentially gone, appetite back, and suddenly way too much energy skipping around the house.
As someone with health anxiety, winter illnesses can really rattle me. Over the last few years, I’ve spent a lot of time learning what helps us feel prepared — not to rush the process, but to keep my son comfortable and supported while his body heals.
The key to keeping symptoms at bay were red light therapy, headache cold caps and proper supplementation. You want to put the red light on the chest, back of neck for fever or abdomen (tummy issues). The cold cap is a MUST and you should have at least two on hand that you continually rotate as they lose their cool - you will be SO happy you have these and they are key to staying comfortable during fevers or in general for headaches. They also work great for anxiety - just put on the chest. Supplement directions on label should be followed - most important ones are the Oscillococcinum, Immune, bio-active silver, and propolis spray. Drop the Baja salt in your mouth after for deep hydration but pedialyte is a good alternative. Motrin and Tylenol alternated as needed when fevers get super high.
