How to check a 3-phase single-speed motor winding. Measure phase-to-phase resistance: U-V / V-W / U-W.
Safety first โ ๏ธ
Before measuring motor windings:
- isolate/disconnect the motor from power
- lock out the starter/breaker
- place a โDO NOT SWITCH ONโ warning tag
- follow proper LOTO & safety procedures.
If the motor was recently running, wait until it stops completely and verify zero voltage before touching the terminals.
For accurate readings:
- remove bridge links before measuring
- compare all 3 windings
โ equal resistance = probably OK โ
big ฮฉ difference = possible winding issue โ
โ ๏ธ This is just a quick basic check of the motor windings โ not a complete motor diagnostic test.
A proper motor test may also include insulation resistance, surge/interturn testing, current analysis, vibration, temperature checks and more depending on the situation.
