3 essential things you need to know in order to keep your venus flytrap happy and healthy! 1. Soil 🪨 Make sure you switch out the normal soil that usually comes with it to carnivorous plant-friendly soil. You can find it on Amazon or make it yourself! They need nutrient-poor, acidic soil, an easy DIY mix is 50% sphagnum peat moss and 50%perlite. 2. Water 💧 Flytraps can only be watered with DISTILLED or rainwater, as regular water will kill them. They also need to be sitting in a bowl of water to mimic the conditions of their native bog habitats. 3. Sunlight☀️ While they say they can be kept indoors, they thrive in direct sunlight. Make sure they are not in the shade and can soak up the sun! #venusflytrap #plants #distilledwateronly

Have you ever bought a Venus flytrap plant and killed it? Here’s how to take care of it. Light: Full sun to partial sun depending on where you live, like if you live in temperate weather then full sun is okay. These plants can withstand temperatures up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit and as low as 35 degrees Fahrenheit but of course keep an eye out on them as if kept without water they can die or scorch from too strong sunlight. Water: They grow in bog like conditions therefore keeping them sitting on distilled water all the time during their growing season is most ideal. Reverse osmosis, distilled, or rain water only. Since it’s low in TDS levels. If you use tap water they will die. Soil: Most expert growers recommend using 1 part perlite to 4 parts peat moss. Or 1 part perlite to 1 part horticultural sand. Fertilizer: If kept outdoors you don’t have to worry about fertilizing it as it will catch some bugs. But you can also feed it certain bugs or use a well balanced fertilizer like the MaxSea fertilizer sold at California Carnivores website. Have you ever bought and killed one of these?

Most people think their Venus fly trap dies because it’s “hard to care for”… but the truth is, it’s almost always these two simple mistakes. First: tap water. Tap water contains dissolved minerals like calcium, magnesium, and salts. In most houseplants, that’s fine. But Venus fly traps are not normal plants—they evolved in nutrient-poor bogs where the water is extremely pure. Over time, those minerals build up in the soil, burn the roots, and slowly weaken the plant until it turns black and dies. Second: watering from the top. This isn’t about minerals—it’s about consistency. Venus fly traps don’t like wet… then dry. They need constant moisture at all times. In the wild, they grow in bogs where the soil never dries out. Top watering can lead to uneven moisture and dry periods that stress the plant. The correct method is simple: Use only distilled water, rainwater, or reverse osmosis water. And always bottom water using the tray method—letting the plant sit in a shallow layer of water so the soil stays evenly moist. Once you fix these two things, everything changes. Healthier traps. Brighter color. Stronger growth. It’s not your fault—these plants are often sold without the right instructions. But now you know how to keep them alive. #venusflytrap #venusflytrapcare #carnivorousplants #plantcaretips #planttok #houseplants #plantsofinstagram #plantlover #botany #gardeningtips #planthealth #indoorplants #outdoorplants #plantcare #naturefacts #didyouknow #gardenlife #planthelp #plantcommunity #plantaddict

Depending on whether you want to make seed or not, you can always rip off the flower stalk and propagate it to get an identical clone of your flytrap in case it’s a cultivar! I usually do this as flowering also takes a lot of energy away from the plant and will need time to recover the big traps it once had. Looking for more info? Read below! If you’ve ever bought one and watched it slowly turn black… you’re not alone. Here’s how to make yours THRIVE! 🌱 Full sun or Strong Lighting 🚫 No tap water, ALWAYS Distilled, rain, or RO water 🪴 Use the right potting mix, the one in the video is my recommendation, but theres many variations found online. 🪏 Pot size matters! 3” deep pots work well for young plants while a 5” deep or deeper pot is best for larger plants. VFT roots grow down! 😴Venus fly traps need a dormancy during winter months to thrive every summer! Its important to keep them in cooler temperatures and supply less water during this time. GET RID OF ADULT GNATS AT HOME Get rid of fruit flies with items you already have on hands! YOU WILL NEED: • 1/4 cup warm water • 1 tbsp vinegar • 2 tbsp sugar • 4-5 drops of liquid dishwashing detergent Mix it well and let it sit! They get lured by the sweet smell and get trapped by sticky detergent! IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT GNATS: This will work to catch and trap adult gnats. However, to stop it completely I found some tips that I am going to try! Here it goes: 1. ✅QUARANTINE new plants for at least a week! You may not see gnats right away until they hatch but treating early will stop the spread! 2. ❓Shake some BONIDE SYSTEMIC GRANULES and water into the soil! It will kill the larvae. It may take several days to start working so in the mean time… 3. ✅Use sticky traps and the solution I shared above 👆 to catch the adults! They get attracted to bright colours! 4. ✅Bonide systemic granules is not readily available in Toronto, therefore I ordered diatomaceous earth. Just shake some over the soil and tempt gnats to walk into it! It works by disintegrating it slowly! However, once exposed to moist soil it loses it’s strength! Therefore, water from bottom up or remove the powder; water and let it dry on top before spreading it again! 5. 🛑 Doesn’t work: cinnamon powder 6. ❓Mosquito bits GNAT FACTS: - The adult gnats can live 8 days so they can fly into your other plants and lay more eggs. It’s an endless cycle! - Once the systemic has worked and the adults are trapped you will have stopped the spread to your other plants. PLANT CARE: 🌱 treat all your plants. 🌱 keep new plants quarantined for at least a week up to 2 weeks. 🌱 keep top soil dry to prevent gnats from laying eggs in the top couple of inches. Meanwhile, consider watering from the bottom! 🌱 do not repot your plants right away! Let them adjust to your environment! 🌱 a good quality soil mix has less chance of gnat larvae living inside. #gnats #fungusgnats #gnatseverywhere #pestbegone #pestcontroltips #pestfreehome #livingwithplants🌿 #indoorplantcare #indoorjungles #plantissues #plantproblems #indoorgardeningtips #diatomaceousearthfoodgrade #fruitfly #fruitflies

The Venus flytrap is a fascinating carnivorous plant found naturally in the wetlands of North and South Carolina, USA. It grows in nutrient-poor soil, so instead of relying only on the ground for food, it traps and eats insects. Its leaves are modified into jaw-like traps with tiny hair-like structures called trigger hairs. When an insect touches these hairs two or three times, the trap snaps shut within seconds. Once closed, the plant releases digestive enzymes that slowly break down the insect and absorb nutrients like nitrogen. After digestion, the trap opens again, leaving behind the insect’s hard shell. Each trap can close only a few times before it dies. The Venus flytrap shows how plants can adapt in surprising ways to survive in harsh environments. 🌱🪰 • Follow - @explainscience.ai • #instagram #study #studygram #education #student

Keeping carnivorous plants as pets? I kept going back to the pages of my science book which mentioned Venus flytrap and Pitcher plant when I was in school. Little did the 12 year old Indian Pet Keeper know that, one day, he would get the chance to keep and observe them so closely! Heartfelt thanks to @theshamanvalley for such amazing collection, quality and guidance (the plants don't even need repotting as they come fully established in their pots) The team is very knowledgeable and polite. 🌱 I got two varieties of Sundews and a Venus flytrap. I planned to feed these plants only for the video to showcase their behaviour. It is usually not recommended to manually feed them as they can catch their own food. Also, their primary food isn’t insects, it’s still sunlight and photosynthesis, but insects act as supplements. 🪰 They thrive in bright sunlight/grow light and only stay well when the water TDS stays below 50. And since they have evolved like this due to nutrient poor soil, any amount of nutrient can harm them. 🤒 . #pet #plants #animal #gardening #wildlife #insect
