DADid you also learn to look away?
Every painting teaches me something.
Moving to Tennessee I expected a desert season. A wilderness season.
And in many ways it was.
Unearthed roots exposed to fresh air…
spindly fingers threading their way into new soil.
But I wasn’t expecting the rain. I wasn’t expecting God to gently pour out a consistent flow of encouragement.
Encouragement to envision.
To be honest I was afraid to dream. I’ve grieved dead dreams before. I haven’t been good at separating a realistic, strive-worthy dream from an idealistic, escapist fantasy.
But through multiple facets of my life I was getting encouragement to dream again. Through friends, through scripture, through dreams in my sleep, and even from other people’s art! I couldn’t escape even though I tried. Despite my lack of trust in God, he’s been faithful to me.
I think that’s a big distinction from where I once was. I can dream again not because my own merit deserves to, but because God is trustworthy and faithful, unrelenting in calling me on to greater things because he’s adopted me as a son. I can’t trust in these dreams themselves, but I can trust in God with my life.

I’m trying to harness the words that connects these things to this painting, and coming up short.

Was it too beautiful to bear? Too much light touching your soul?
Have you been met with beauty you can’t escape from?
A hope you can’t relinquish?
