For all my California folks do you live near an orange tree or friends with a neighbor that gifts oranges to you? 🍊🌈🥰 Orange trees are quite popular in California and there is a reason for this is because of Spanish missionaries who planted these trees amongst Los Angeles that eventually stretched far to the Central Valley. While there is a legacy of slavery and exploitation of labor, we must acknowledge that those who picked the fruits and took care of the trees were not paid equitably. The citrus industry was the most profitable, it was second to oil back in the 1920s. Can you imagine if the fossil fuel industry failed during that time and for the rest of history? 😅 unfortunately today orange trees are not as popular with urbanization and many orchards have moved up north. If you ever been to the Inland Empire or Orange County you can still see some monuments or hidden messages of the glorification of citrus 🍊 What fruit trees do you have in your neighborhoods? Our gathered goods were used in a cooking class in the kitchen cabin to make purple potato gnocchi with wild sage and garlic buchu butter, wild wood fired pizzas, rainbow salad and ice plant relish, all enjoyed in the cosy Glasshouse. I found a a new bird species, well, not really but I found their lookalike! Hawk Wing’s mushroom is known as Sarcodon imbricatus. They have a brown cap and a few dark scales. Their underside has spore-bearing structure instead of pores. My good friend Rachel took me on a little foraging adventure in thte mountains of Colorado where I got to learn about this little one. Hawk Wings grow around spruce trees during July and sometimes September. I have personally found that this mushroom is easily able to be harvested from the ground, just look at the way they look. It is important to note that there can be similar species but they are often inedible or have a bitter taste. After finishing our foraging trip, we headed back home to forage some wild greens for the dinner. My friend Rachel is a stellar forager, cook, designer, and all encompassing creative and she made this wonderful delicous meal! It had a very good taste, salty, sweet, and scrumptious.
