A kitchen can look beautiful… but if these 5 cabinet measurements are off, it won’t work right 👇🏻 1️⃣ Countertop height: ~36” Too high or too low = daily strain on your back and wrists. This is the ergonomic base of the whole kitchen. 2️⃣ Toe kick: 3–4” deep × 4–4.5” high This small recess lets you stand close to the counter. If it’s wrong, you’ll feel it every time you cook. 3️⃣ Space from counter to uppers: ~18” Too low = appliances don’t fit. Too high = cabinets are hard to reach. Balance is everything. 4️⃣ Walkway clearance: minimum 36” (ideal 42–48”) Too tight causes collisions. Too wide kills efficiency. This defines how the kitchen flows. 5️⃣ Drawer & appliance clearance: full extension with no conflicts Drawers must clear plumbing, handles, and appliances, or you lose function fast. ✨ A functional kitchen isn’t luck, it’s precise measurements. This is the biggest thing we do BEFORE planning a kitchen layout!! I’m renovating my own kitchen and these two things were must not miss steps to designing my perfect kitchen! First save or like this to come back to for later! We have learned through over a decade of designing kitchens the two most important things you can do 1. Walk through the pain points in your clients existing kitchen before planning the new one. This allows you and the client to assess how they want to function in their new kitchen and avoid the same work flow problems/lack of storage, etc in their existing kitchen. 2. Take inventory!! This is our other must not miss recommendation so your new kitchen or clients new kitchen will have a landing place for everything! Drawer configuration might seem like a small decision, but it shapes how a kitchen actually lives. I almost always design lower cabinets to be drawer-heavy — with variation in sizes — because the goal is function and maximizing organization, not forcing everything into one format. Before anything is drawn, I look at how the kitchen will be used: daily routines, cooking habits, storage needs, and how the space needs to support real life. From there, the cabinetry design takes shape. Drawers allow you to see what you have, organize with intention, and move through the kitchen with ease. Smaller drawers can hold everyday tools and details, while deeper drawers support dishes, cookware, and pantry storage — all without bending or digging. This is where custom cabinetry makes such a difference. Instead of forcing your life into standard boxes, drawers can be sized, stacked, and detailed intentionally — supporting both function and the quiet beauty of the space. And visually, drawers calm a kitchen. Thoughtful proportions, fewer interruptions, and a rhythm that feels custom rather than cookie-cutter. We thought that too. But with a few tricky details we got it to feel furniture like. Here’s a list of what helped: 1– we raised the toe kick to 6” and ran it as deep as we could under the cabinets to create a floating effect. This was a tad tricky behind the dishwasher but we did get the depth 2–we added a dark metal to the toe kick surface that reflected the floor just enough to create the suggestion it continues 3–we custom made turned legs and added just a little brass foot for fun 4–we added a brass foot rail to give the seating area a hit of soft metal 5–we created a cantilevered door style influenced by empire furniture to give the main elevation a stepped plane. This added fun and games to the dishwasher panel design and threw us a little on the sink install but it all worked in the end For more info we did a you tube series on this project, link in bio #kitchendesign
