The mom guilt from not being able to breast feed and the shame I felt from the internet, over spoken individuals, and even medical staff was something I know many women can relate to. It’s something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. “You know breast milk is what’s best for him, right?” “Why wouldn’t you want to help build his immune system?” “Formula is the fast food of feeding” To be able to nurture your baby with your own body is most mothers’ dream, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way. And I’m here to remind you that that’s okay. Whether your body didn’t allow it, or you made the decision based on your mental health, lifestyle, or simply by preference… Your baby will still be fed. Your baby will be just as happy, just as healthy, just as smart. Fed is best, but here’s my story: I work and didn’t want my baby to only breastfeed, so I knew she would bottle feed from the beginning I originally was going to pump everything for her bottles. She was in the NICU for two weeks, so I was pumping anyways. Until my supply dropped and I got the most evil case of mastitis that burned a hole in my skin. I had no choice BUT to use formula. I of course know the incredible benefits of breast milk. I’m grateful I was able to produce some for my baby for her first 3 months of life. I know it helped her development. Formula is a beautiful blessing, and it saved me from the emotional heartache of trying to increase my supply with no success, and healing through the damage the mastitis did to me. Never shame a mother for how she feeds her baby. This was one of the most horrific things to go through as a parent. I remember we would drive around for hours trying to find Eastons formula, paid insane shipping prices, begged people to try & help us find the right one, bought formula on marketplace for 3x the price. The feeling of not being able to find the formula my baby needed was the worst feeling ever & all the “you should have just breastfed” comments, like I didn’t already try that. I will literally never forget. So thankful Hayzel’s formula is easy to find & we don’t have to stress about if we can get it or not. EDIT TO ADD: if you breastfed during this time, I’m happy for you. But this video is for those of us who COULDNT, who beat ourselves up daily because we couldn’t & we couldn’t find the right formula for our babies. I’m happy for you that you didn’t have to feel that kind of hopelessness & failure. Before I start, fed is best [well, I believe so anyway] 👉🏼 I had spoken to mums prior and from the conversations that were had, they said how much breastfeeding took a toll on them and how hard it truly was. 👉🏼 I wanted my partner to be able to bond over feeding time too, not just me [and he is so appreciative of these special moments]. 👉🏼 I knew I am CRANKYYYYYYY as hell when I don’t get 8-9 hours of sleep a night - and I knew I would lose sleep with bub, so formula feeding meant we could share the load and I could be a better mum and wife. 👉🏼 I honestly never even wanted to. It’s something I have never been keen on and I didn’t want to be pressured by ‘society’ to do so. So I chose not to. I’m not here to convince you what to do - just simply sharing my journey. Follow @the_essexs for more things I wish I knew earlier as a first time mum. Disclaimer: I have nothing against breastfeeding, it just wasn’t for me.
