WEThe Full Story: The Shield of the Elephant Gate 🐘🛡️
As you walk through the Hathi Pol or the Tripolia Gate at the City Palace, you’ll see massive wooden doors studded with sharp, 9-inch iron spikes. While they look aesthetic today, they were actually the ultimate defense against the most powerful weapon of the medieval era: The War Elephant.
In ancient warfare, enemy armies used intoxicated elephants as living battering rams. These giants were trained to ram their massive foreheads against wooden gates to break them down. 🛡️
To counter this, the architects of Mewar placed these iron spikes precisely at the forehead level of an elephant. If an elephant tried to ram the door, the spikes would pierce its skull, making it impossible for the animal to apply force.
But the engineering didn’t stop there. The gates were often built in a L-shape (bent) entrance. 📐 This prevented the enemy from gaining a straight “running start,” ensuring that even the strongest elephant couldn’t build enough momentum to shatter the gate.
These spikes are silent witnesses to the legendary bravery of Udaipur, proving that our city was built not just for beauty, but for an unbreakable spirit. 🏛️⚔️

UPNa obali Ibra, gde se jutarnja magla spušta niz planinske vrhove, uzdiže se Maglič – srednjovekovna tvrđava iz 13. veka. Podigli su je Nemanjići, u vreme kralja Uroša I, da čuva put ka Studenici i manastirima koji su bili duhovno srce Srbije.
Njeni kameni bedemi, sedam kula i glavna donžon kula, vekovima su motrili na dolinu Ibra. Maglič je bio sedište episkopa, ali i vojna utvrda – stražar na važnom drumskom pravcu. U vreme turskih osvajanja, tvrđava je bila mesto otpora, a kasnije i simbol snage naroda koji je čuvao svoje svetinje.
Maglič nije samo kamen i zid, već bajka u kojoj se prošlost i sadašnjost dodiruju. Kada kročiš kroz kapije, čuješ šapat istorije – kao da vetar nosi glasove stražara i monaha. U njenim kulama još uvek odjekuje odvažnost, a u njenim senkama počiva tajna večne Srbije.
Tvrđava stoji kao čarobni stražar, podsećajući nas da je svaka legenda uklesana u kamen, a svaka bajka rođena iz stvarnosti.

MOLa Rampe Major est l’un des plus anciens accès au Rocher de Monaco. Aménagée à partir du XVIᵉ siècle, elle permettait de relier le port et le quartier de la Condamine à la forteresse princière.
Après le siège de Monaco de 1507 par les troupes génoises, la Principauté renforce considérablement ses défenses. L’objectif est clair : transformer le Rocher en une véritable place forte imprenable. Bastions, remparts et ouvrages avancés sont construits ou modernisés pour contrôler les accès et protéger le palais.
La tour visible sur l’image est la tour de l’Oreillon, édifiée en 1707-1708 par l’ingénieur du roi Guiraud. Elle faisait partie du système défensif protégeant l’entrée ouest du Rocher et surveillait la montée de la Rampe Major. Sa forme massive et arrondie permettait de mieux résister aux tirs d’artillerie.
Aujourd’hui, la Rampe Major conserve son tracé historique et offre un témoignage unique de l’architecture militaire monégasque, héritée des grandes fortifications mises en place après le traumatisme du siège de 1507.

Les remparts, élevés de 1357 à 1373, qui atteignaient huit mètres de haut, étaient entourés d'un fossé d'une profondeur d'environ quatre mètres alimenté par les eaux de la Sorgue et de la Durançole. Cette enceinte, longue de 4 330 mètres, enserrait les faubourgs et de nombreux espaces agricoles. Elle se composait de 12 portes, 36 tours quadrangulaires, et 56 échauguettes.
Lors des travaux d'aménagement du pourtour des remparts ce fossé fut comblé. Il ne reste donc visible de nos jours que leur partie supérieure. Ils s'ouvraient par sept portes qui étaient protégées par des tours et accessibles uniquement par un pont-levis. Les murailles étaient renforcées par trente-cinq grandes tours et cinquante tours plus petites.

During the construction work around the ramparts, this moat was filled in. Therefore, only the upper section remains visible today. They were accessed through seven gates, each protected by a tower and accessible only by a drawbridge. The walls were reinforced by 35 large towers and 50 smaller ones.

GRIndia had nearly 1,10,000 varieties of rice till 1970 and this diversity has been lost to posterity as a result of the green revolution with its emphasis on mono culture and hybrid crops. Now, only 6,000 species or varieties of rice survive.
