Update: placed with new hope 💖Leaning into his spectacular beauty, Romeo was reaching his paws through his door as though I’d somehow forget he was there. ❤️ As if! I opened his door and Romeo promptly snuggled himself into my arms and peeked around like he was working. His job being, of course, to welcome me to the Care Center. 🧡 Perhaps hoping to find the most interesting things to point out, Romeo made great efforts to explain that this is actually his second time here, so he’s a bit of an expert. 💛 But, he was quick to explain, he’s also an expert in a lot of things, like making friends, and it’s no wonder why he’s become a staff and volunteer darling. The first time I saw Chandler, I was completely smitten. I mean, how could I not be? Those fluffy cheeks, his little ears and big paws. It’s just that the first time we met, he was decidedly less enthused to see me, evident in the way he snuggled himself all the way in the corner of his cubby to peer cautiously at me. Acclimating to shelter life can take time but Chandler has really dedicated his to making sense of it. Now waiting at the front to chit chat, he’s absolutely the most adorable picture of progress. Chandler’s previous guardian explained that hrcan be a little unsure around new people, but, once given the chance to warm up does so spectacularly by becoming the friendly, gentle, and outgoing cat he is in his heart. The little extra time is both adorable and completely understandable but not always conducive to making new friends in the shelter where it can be a little too fast paced for our gentle hearted friends. For all the cats who make settling into the shelter look effortless, there are others like Mufasa who wear the effort it takes them all over their faces. Mufasa puts real work into each day he spends at the shelter and rightfully so as he knows it will bring him one step closer to finding his forever family. Greeting people at the front of his condo and coming as forward as he can when people are in Adoptions, Mufasa isn’t entirely sure what he should do next. I can practically see the ideas floating across his mind - should he allow pets, try to look out the window, or maybe even try to hop out of his condo? We know that Mufasa tends to prefer contact on his own terms when it comes to children, cats, and strangers, but can be a friendly, cheerful, and curious guy when given the chance. Peeking around from her little perch, Johnna looked like she might be interested in meeting me and I think that, at least partially, she was. I also think that the shelter hasn’t been the best place for Johnna to explore her interests as fully as she should or for us to get to know Johnna better. Brought to us from a home with many other cats, it’s possible that she hasn’t had as many opportunities to meet new people as other cats have had, but as Johnna tries to look around and see what’s going on in Adoptions, she’s very open to learning and she really tries. Allowing pets and even leaning forward for some extra seems to be more her style than coming to the front to ask for them herself, so you might need to make the first move. In the corner of his cubby, Peapod gently explained that his recent experiences have really run the gamut and, like anyone trying to find their footing on shaky ground, he’s found himself floundering a bit as he makes sense of all these big changes. Let’s start with what we know. Peapod was found on his own looking a little worse for wear and was brought to us to get started on the next step. For Peapod’s part, he came in with an open mind. He’d proudly present his perfect fluffy cheeks to us when we offered pets and gently lean in for more because Peapod wanted to get started on the right paw and he sure did! But shelter life isn’t always easy and the days have stretched on in front of him. Maybe Peapod’s begun to wonder when someone will notice him even though he isn’t entirely sure what to do when they do. He wasn’t really looking for any pets or treats that I had to offer, but we know Peapod’s looking to find a patient family to call his own. Meet some of our kitties who need fosters 💛 Alfie & Penelope were being given away for free on Craigslist, and we stepped in before they ended up in the wrong hands. We also helped their owner spay his two female cats to stop the cycle. Now they just need a safe place to land. Coco showed up at a colony in Queens already ear-tipped. She’s a sweet, shy girl who needs a patient foster to help her build confidence (and shed a little weight) so her loving personality can shine. Theo is another shy soul looking for someone who can spend time with him each day and show him humans can be trusted. Gracie has made so much progress with us and is ready to keep moving forward in a foster home. Misty has had ongoing digestive issues since we rescued her in December. She’s very social and affectionate, but needs a foster who can stay on top of her nutrition and care. Fostering saves lives. Self starters like Melbin know that the results don’t always reflect the effort and that’s ok. At least, this is what he’s trying to remind himself as he gets through the day. Melbin was brought to us after walking himself into someone’s home. Maybe he’d heard about forever families and thought he had an idea on how to get one or maybe he just thought he’d take a chance. As it turns out, what Melbin also needed was a hand, which we’ve been more than happy to offer as he settles into shelter life. In the meantime, however, Melbin seems to have taken a step back from the hard work of finding a forever family by huddling in the back of his cubby. We know the Care Center can be a lot, but Melbin accepts petting even if he isn’t one to ask for it. We hope you’ll come in and show Melbin that all of his efforts have been well worth it.
