MO| | AAC Fact: AAC devices do not hinder verbal speech.
The myth of it hindering speech is still one that I hear often. Thankfully we have so many speech language pathologists on this platform who can speech against this myth.
Unfortunately, this myth stops parents from getting a device for their child. I understand that thought process to a point.
As a mother, I understood wanting to hear his voice, but also as a mother I understood how important any form of communication would be.
This doesn’t mean that an AAC device will assist all nonspeakers to verbally speak, but it does help some.
In Ronin’s case, after a year and a half of having his device, he is now starting to approximate entire sentences that are programmed into his AAC.
It’s been amazing to hear his voice in both forms.
I cherish each of his forms. Whether he says mom verbally, on his AAC, or signs it…they all carry that same feeling in my heart.
The feeling of pure love from this tiny human that I created.
