François Truffaut was expelled from school, arrested for petty theft, and confined to a reformatory before he turned sixteen. His father tried to have him declared incorrigible. Then film critic André Bazin took him under his wing, got him out of trouble, and gave him a job at Cahiers du cinéma. Truffaut channeled his pain into The 400 Blows—a semi-autobiographical film about a neglected boy that launched the French New Wave and changed cinema forever. The final shot of The 400 Blows—Antoine Doinel running to the sea, then turning to face the camera in freeze frame—is one of the most famous images in film history. It was Truffaut looking back at his own life, freezing the moment where childhood ends and uncertainty begins. He went on to direct over twenty films, but that first one remained his most personal. Cinema didn't just save Truffaut's career. It saved his life. #FrancoisTruffaut #FrenchNewWave #The400Blows #FilmHistory #CinemaLegend

🎬 The French New Wave revolutionized cinema in the late 1950s, breaking away from traditional storytelling and embracing a more experimental, personal approach. Pioneers like Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut used innovative techniques such as jump cuts and on-location shooting, infusing their films with a raw, spontaneous energy. This movement not only changed the way stories were told but also influenced countless filmmakers worldwide. As we celebrate this groundbreaking era, what’s your favorite film from the French New Wave?

Before becoming a filmmaker, François Truffaut was a sharp, often ruthless film critic for Cahiers du Cinéma. He publicly attacked established French directors and the French film industry. Because of this, he was banned from the Cannes Film Festival in 1958 after criticizing the festival itself. A year later, he returned to Cannes not as a critic, but as a director with The 400 Blows. The film premiered at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival and won him the Best Director prize. The film is deeply autobiographical. Truffaut had a troubled childhood in Paris. He struggled at school, clashed with his parents, and eventually spent time in a juvenile detention center. The character Antoine Doinel, played by Jean-Pierre Léaud, is essentially Truffaut’s alter ego. The English title of the movie "400 Blows" is an overly literal translation of the original title. The original title stems from the French expression "Faire les quatre cents coups", a figure of speech meaning "to live a wild life", as the main character does. A better translation of the expression would be "to do the 400 dirty tricks". Film: 400 Blows

#NouvelleVague #RichardLinklater #Godard #Truffaut #FilmReview

Before the #FrenchNewWave unofficially kicked off with films like Claude Chabrol’s Le Beau Serge, François Truffaut’s (@ftruffaut) The 400 Blows, and Jean-Luc Godard’s (@godardongodard) Breathless, #AgnèsVarda had already laid down the movement’s #aesthetic foundation with her 1955 debut #LaPointeCourte. Though Varda merely followed her own creative vision, utilizing her skill at photography to depict two stories unfolding in a French community, she inadvertently inspired concepts for “#LaNouvelleVague” while her would-be contemporaries were still writing film reviews for Cahiers du Cinéma (@cahiersducinema_officiel). Throughout her expansive and often experimental career, Varda (@agnes.varda) has communicated simple truths while challenging viewers to decide, for themselves, what’s natural and what’s an intervention specifically designed to inspire a sensory response. This video essay examines the core themes of Varda’s first three features, and how similar principles influenced her documentaries and short films.

Come è nato A bout de souffle (Fino all'ultimo respoiro) di Godard?
