Fructose gets a bad reputation in nutrition conversations… But much of the research showing harm comes from animal studies, where fructose is metabolized very differently than in humans. Other studies feed people isolated fructose, something that doesn’t exist in nature. In whole foods, fructose comes paired with glucose, which allows the body to absorb and metabolize it properly. You do not need to get into ketosis to burn fat. This should be obvious, if you *needed* to get into ketosis to burn fat, nobody would ever lose fat on a high carbohydrate diet, but obviously they do. One of the things that people trip over is the idea that you switch to using fat for fuel. This sounds exciting, who wouldn't want to burn fat for fuel? In practical terms, when people think they *need* to get into ketosis to burn body fat, they will be forced to gravitate towards reducing their carbohydrate intake. The thing is, this does *not* indicate you are burning body fat for fuel. For example, multiple trials have shown that reducing carbohydrate intake results in an increase in fat oxidation, however this doesn't indicate that more body fat is lost (PMID 33479499, 27385608, 26278052). In tightly controlled feeding trials, altering the ratio of carbohydrates and fats in the diet appears to make very little difference in terms of body fat loss (PMID 28193517). Yes, rates of fat oxidation will be higher on low carb, high fat diets but this means fuck all if your diet is not calorie controlled. Can we please stop confusing burning fat that you eat and burning body fat, they are not the same thing. Pushing people towards ketosis removes dietary choice and for long-term fat loss, adherence to a calorie controlled diet is the bottleneck for success. Whilst some people love keto, we shouldn't shoehorn everyone into it with misinformation. That doesn't serve anyone. P.S. if anyone wants me to tag them in the posts I have cited, just let me know.
