My simple guide on how to prune a lemon tree. Pruning your lemon tree provides quite a few benefits. By thinning out the tree, you create better air circulation and allow more sunlight to reach the entire tree. Overall it will create a healthier and more productive lemon tree. #pruningtrees #pruningtips #fruittreecare #fruittrees #lemontree

This infographic is a handy guide for understanding how different fruit plants produce their crops and, consequently, how they should be pruned to maximize your harvest. Pruning correctly is crucial because many fruits only grow on wood of a certain age. Here is a breakdown of the four main pruning styles shown: 1. Hard Annual Prune Best for: Peaches, Nectarines, and Apricots. The Science: These trees fruit on "1-year wood"โ€”the branches that grew during the previous summer. The Technique: Perform "hard heading cuts" to remove a significant portion of last year's growth. This stimulates the tree to grow new branches that will bear fruit next year. 2. Light Spur Thinning Best for: Apples, Pears, and Cherries. The Science: These trees fruit on "spurs"โ€”short, stubby twigs that grow off older wood (2+ years old). These spurs can produce fruit for many years. The Technique: Use "thinning cuts" to remove entire small branches if they become too crowded. The goal is to ensure light and air can reach the remaining spurs. 3. Heavy Dormant Cane Prune Best for: Table Grapes, Wine Grapes, and Muscadine. The Science: Grapes grow on "1-year canes" that sprout from older, permanent "cordons" (the main arms of the vine). The Technique: Most of last year's canes are "completely removed" or cut back very heavily during the winter. This keeps the vine manageable and focuses energy on a few high-quality clusters. 4. Cane Renewal Best for: Raspberries, Blackberries, and Blueberries. The Science: These plants often have "spent canes" that have already finished fruiting and will not produce again. The Technique: Identify and remove these old canes at the base ("renewal cut"). This makes room for "new growth" (primocanes) to emerge from the soil, which will become next year's fruit-bearers. Would you like to know the best time of year to start pruning a specific fruit from this list?

PRUNING PEACHES - Itโ€™s legitimately scary to prune fruit trees, especially for the first time. What if you do it wrong...did you ruin years of growth? The pruning strategy below is one weโ€™ve used on peaches for 3+ years now and weโ€™ve gotten SO many peaches from this tree we have to give them away: 3 Dโ€™s: Remove all dead, diseased, and damaged branches. Easiest place to start, both practically and emotionally ๐Ÿ˜‚ Open Structure: Peaches โ€œwantโ€ a open, somewhat airy interior, so remove large branches that โ€œcross throughโ€ the interior of the tree. You can also remove any budding branches here, as theyโ€™ll be blocked by the outer layer of the tree and will develop poorly. Lowering the Canopy: Unless youโ€™re a giant, you probably want a smaller tree where you can access your fruit. Kevin is 6โ€™4โ€ and still struggles to reach the top of the tree in this video, so heโ€™s cutting it down a touch so he can actually harvest the fruit without needing a ladder or stepstool. 6-8โ€™ is great for a backyard peach tree. Thinning Cuts: Each bud will produce a flower, which will produce a peach. Sometimes you have 12+ buds on one thin branch, which is an offshoot of ANOTHER branch! This is a recipe for disaster as the weight of all of the peaches will snap your branches. You can cut 30-50% of the length off of these branches, which removes those bud sites and โ€œthinsโ€ the amount of peaches youโ€™ll have on that branch. Some of these techniques, particularly the last one, seem extreme, BUT will result in a structurally sound tree that produces a ton of high-quality peaches.

FRUIT TREE FAIL - A painful lesson in orcharding! We thinned our peach tree out this year, but forgot to thin our nectarine. Thinning is a tough but necessary process when growing fruit trees, especially early in life with stone fruit (peaches, plums, etc). It allows the tree to focus energy on LESS BUT BETTER fruit instead of trying to grow out hundreds of smaller, poor fruit. As you can see our nectarines fruit are lower quality overall and also have bent or broken branches under their own weight!
