In aldehydes, the carbonyl carbon is bonded to at least one hydrogen atom, whereas in ketones, it is bonded to two carbon atoms. The general formulas are: Aldehydes: R–CHO Ketones: R–CO–R′ The carbonyl group is highly polar due to the difference in electronegativity between carbon and oxygen. This creates a partial positive charge on carbon and a partial negative charge on oxygen, making the carbon atom electrophilic (electron-deficient). Because of this polarity, aldehydes and ketones undergo nucleophilic addition reactions. Nucleophiles (electron-rich species) attack the carbonyl carbon, leading to the formation of new compounds such as alcohols, cyanohydrins, and imines. Aldehydes are generally more reactive than ketones. This is because: They have less steric hindrance (fewer bulky groups around the carbonyl carbon) They have stronger electron-withdrawing effects due to hydrogen These compounds also show important physical properties: They have higher boiling points than hydrocarbons but lower than alcohols Lower members are soluble in water due to hydrogen bonding with water molecules Aldehydes and ketones are widely used in industry and biology.
