Crossyne guttata also known as the parasol lily (sambreelbkom) is part of the Amaryllidaceae family. Widely spread in the cape they flower at the very end of summer. Crossyne shoots out fireworks of flowers, which look very alien like. Big balls that hosts hundreds of dark maroon flowers on white spokes attached to the stalk- these flowers attract a variety of pollinators especially flies. By flowering at the end of summer when almost nothing else is in flower it guarantees a good pollination rate as the insects are desperate for some nectar in the hottest and driest time of the year. This flower comes from a land of fire — the fynbos of South Africa 🔥 Burning sun, rocky soil and regular wildfires mean not death here, but renewal. After fire, heat and smoke wake the seeds, and ash and burnt ground become home for a new generation. This is part of the natural life cycle of fynbos plants — including Serruria and other members of the Proteaceae family. The delicate, geometric beauty of Serruria is both a true art of survival and a mark of deep time — the result of millions of years of evolution. Plants of the Proteaceae family trace back to the time of the supercontinent Gondwana 🌍 Feathery leaves, spiral structures in the flower heads, and bracts sharp as tongues of flame are not decorative details, but a brilliant construction of nature — the kind of beauty that fascinated Ernst Haeckel in his research on natural forms. For me, meeting Serruria opened a new depth of beauty. A lesson in elegant resilience — the kind I often wish I had in life. If you sit down with eyes closed amongst these bushes with the paper flowers rustling in the wind, it sounds like you are gently drifting out into the ocean in a sea of stars. In the centre of each of these paper like flowers is a dark red ring, attracting several beetle species- a safe camouflaged space to feed on pollen and site to mate.
