What if I told you your garden could grow inches while you slept? 😳 🌱 Friday Fun Facts: Asparagus Edition Here’s what happened when I paid attention. 📏 The results: Three shoots measured at the start. Checked them 24 hours later — no watering, no fussing, no intervention. Asparagus can shoot up anywhere from 2 to 7 inches in a single day under the right conditions. Warm soil, a little sun, and that’s genuinely all it took. Nature said “let me show you something.” 🌿 Why asparagus might be the smartest thing you plant this year: Plant it once and it comes back every single spring for 15 to 30 years. No replanting, no fuss — just an annual harvest that shows up like a reliable friend. One established crown can produce 20 to 25 spears per season. Plant a row of ten crowns and you’re doing the math and smiling right now. It basically grows itself. Once established, asparagus is drought tolerant, crowd-resistant, and wildly low maintenance. The hardest part is waiting the first two years for full harvest — and then it pays you back for decades. Beginner friendly. Abundance guaranteed. Patience required just once. If your garden doesn’t have asparagus yet, consider this your sign. 🌱 Drop your questions below — have you grown asparagus before or is this on your list? 👇 #asparagus #gardening101 #GardenersOfInstagram #beginnergardener #GrowYourOwn

This reminds me of when my daughter planted a popcorn kernel to grow corn, and my husband went to the store and bought ears of corn that he stuck halfway down into the soil a few days later🤣 Asparagus grows spears without foliage by using stored energy in its underground root crown. You harvest and eat the spears, which are technically immature shoots on the plant. Once you get far enough into the season, you'll stop picking and let the asparagus get tall and "fern out" to replenish energy in its roots and crown for next year. We loooove asparagus in this house. And as a bonus, it comes up super early, so it's something to harvest before a lot of other stuff is growing in the garden! #backyardgarden #zone7gardening

I’m always ecstatic when the asparagus has a late season flush of spears after rain. This is the beauty of having established plants. Asparagus plants can last up to 20 years! It’s such a hardy perennial, yet when I speak to people about growing it, the response is usually something like ‘yeah but you have to wait 3 years to eat it’. This is not entirely true. Let me break it down: 🌱You plant crowns in Spring, and they immediately start growing spears - this is year 1 of their life. All spears are left to grow into lovely fronds, giving the crown the best chance to establish. 🌱Plants are cut back and dormant over winter and then by the next spring, spears are popping up! The rule of thumb is that you can eat any spears thicker than a pencil width during the second year of growing. Their thickness depends on how well looked after and fed they are- we were eating heaps during year 2! 🌱By the third spring, you can eat whatever spears you want, but they will eventually be really skinny, and when they get to that point you let them grow and become fern fronds to put energy back into the plant. For me, growing asparagus is a no brainer- unless you don’t like it, then don’t waste your time 😂 #asparagus #gardeninfo #gardeningaustralia #gardener #growingfood

Ever noticed your asparagus curved? Don’t worry, it’s usually the first spears of the season due to scar tissue caused by slugs or frost, it causes them to twist like a shepherd crook Once the weather warms up, they’ll grow nice and straight #asparagus #gardening #homegrown #garden #robsallotment

Throwback to my early days of growing‼️🌱 Asparagus was actually one of the very first things I ever planted when I started growing my own food. I didn’t know much back then, but I figured I’d give it a shot. This clip is from when I was cutting the plants down for the winter so they could rest and come back the next spring. One of the coolest things about asparagus is that once it’s established, it keeps producing year after year. Looking back, it’s wild to see where it all started. That small garden experiment turned into planting a whole field of crops yearly. Anyone else remember the first thing they ever grew? 🌿👇 #GardenThrowback #GrowYourOwnFood #Asparagus #BackyardGarden #GardeningJourney

🌿 Asparagus Update 🌿 I planted my asparagus roots on 4/13/25, and now they’ve turned into tall feathery ferns with tiny buds forming 👀 This stage surprises a lot of people. Those wild ferns aren’t weeds — they’re feeding the roots underground so the plant can produce thicker spears next year.Think of them as solar panels charging up the harvest ☀️ And those tiny oval shapes on the stems? They’re actually asparagus flower buds 🌼After blooming, they can turn into berries (seeds) if pollinated — which means this plant could be female. Male plants usually produce more spears, but female plants can create new asparagus from seed 🌱 So if your asparagus patch looks messy, falling over, and doing the most…it’s not dying — it’s preparing. Garden reminder:Some of the most important growth happens where you can’t see it 💚 #GardenWithFekisha #AsparagusPatch #GardenEducation #GrowYourFood #TrustTheProcess

Asparagus Harvest Tip: When the spears start coming up thin (pencil size or smaller), it means the crowns are running out of stored energy. At that point: 1. Stop harvesting immediately. 2. Let the spears grow into tall fern-like plants (3–5 ft tall). 3. These ferns photosynthesize and recharge the roots for next year’s crop. #aspargus #springharvest #food #garden #tenneessee

When asparagus begins growing quickly, it means the plants are established and the weather is warming. Harvesting at the right stage keeps the plants productive and prevents the spears from becoming woody. When to Cut Harvest asparagus when the spears are: 6–8 inches tall About pencil thickness or larger Tips still tight and compact If the tips begin to open or look fern-like, the spear is already past its best harvest stage. How to Harvest You have two simple options: 1. Snap Method (most common) Gently bend the spear near the base. It will naturally snap where the tender part ends. Leave the woody base in the soil. 2. Knife Method Use a sharp knife or garden snips. Cut the spear just above the soil line. Avoid digging down into the crown. How Often to Check During warm weather asparagus can grow 1–2 inches per day, so check plants daily and harvest regularly. When to Stop Harvesting For established beds: L Harvest for 6–8 weeks in spring. After that, stop cutting and allow spears to grow into tall ferns. The ferns feed the roots and strengthen next year’s crop. Quick Tip for Garden Productivity Leaving a few spears uncut early in the season can help the plant build energy if the bed is still young.
