🔥How I made this Gaussian Splat x Video . . 1) Try to keep your camera as stable as you can to record your videos 2) Having more light in a room is wonderful but you’ll also be surprised by low light situations - so experiment 3) Your first render of a Gaussian splat is beautiful and the fading in with dots is a visual added within Luma AI’s render - I’ll often take the first render then create custom keyframes and rerender for different angles 🔥. Super tip: if you’re recording is long I splice it up and render those short clips 👹 Rendering Gaussian splats take a bit of time to be patient. . . ✨Fourier Integrals and 3D Gaussian Wave Packets✨ Fourier integrals are a way to express complex wave patterns as a sum of simpler sine and cosine waves. Think of it like trying to recreate a complicated sound by combining many pure tones at different frequencies. If you have a function that changes continuously (like a wave or signal), a Fourier integral lets you break it down into these basic building blocks (sine and cosine waves). Instead of just adding up discrete waves (like in Fourier series), you’re adding up a continuous range of them, which is useful for waves that don’t repeat. A Fourier integral is like a recipe that tells you how to mix different waves together to recreate any continuous wave pattern. A Gaussian wave packet is a type of wave that is initially localized (concentrated in a small region) and has a shape that looks like a bell curve (called a Gaussian). In 3D, imagine a little "blob" of waves that spreads out over time. It's localized in space initially but spreads as it moves. This type of wave packet is often used in quantum mechanics to describe particles because it captures both their position and their tendency to spread out. So, a 3D Gaussian wave packet is like a wave “blob” that starts in a specific location and expands over time, and its intensity is distributed in space like a 3D bell curve. Pathtraced Gaussian Splatting! This time focusing on dynamic range and light behavior. For this test, I captured the footage with a DJI Osmo Action 6, recording in 10-bit Log to preserve as much dynamic range as possible. In After Effects, I then cheated a little: by pulling most values down with curves while keeping only the brightest highlights intact, I kind of extended the dynamic range (fake, but effective). Back in Octane Render, I pushed the exposure back up using a physically based camera with path tracing. This caused the highlights to Clip (over expose) naturally, allowing Octane’s optical effects to really shine: • depth of field • bloom & glare • chromatic aberration • lens flares The result feels much more photographic and believable. (maaaaaybe i overused the effects a bit. but i love it too much) This time, the scene features my beautiful, old and shiny projector lenses which are perfect subjects to test reflections and light interaction. Watching those reflective surfaces react to light while flying through the splatted scene with a virtual camera genuinely feels like virtual photography, almost like a form of light-field exploration. Still a lot to explore, but Gaussian Splatting combined with physically based rendering continues to open up fascinating new possibilities. #gaussiansplatting #gaussian #splatting #splat #3DGS @otoy @octanerenderbest @motiondesigners @motionprocess #otoy #octane #octanerender #pathtracing #virtualphotography
