EYYou often hear that paleontologists will lick fossil bones while they’re in the field…I’m not kidding.
There’s actually a good rationale for this. Fossil bones (like modern bones) are porous, perforated with tiny holes. Because of this, a small amount of moisture will be drawn into these holes, causing stickage. Ergo, your tongue SHOULD stick to objects like fossil bones and NOT stick to things like rocks.
While this is a “thing” we do on occasion, it’s moreso a “party trick” that we do during public outreach and education. In reality, it is usually pretty easy to tell fossil from rock in the field. Additionally, you don’t really want to be sticking your tongue on them. Other than the fact that…they’ve been on the ground…some fossil bones can be radioactive (as is the case for many bones from the Morrison Formation).
Additionally, advances in technology means that we can do really incredible things in the lab. We now have ways to infer things like diet, habitat, migration patterns, and even genetic makeup from things as lithic as fossil bones. Applying additional human DNA to these fragile materials would risk destroying this ancient evidence.
So though you may hear this “neat” paleo fact in museums, know that we lick fossil bones for a completely DIFFERENT reason: because we like the taste…
