This is a classic example of gestalt language processing (GLP). Children with gestalt learning don’t learn language word by word the way analytic processors do. Instead, they pick up chunks or scripts — often from movies, songs, books, or conversations — and repeat those whole phrases or scenes verbatim. These are called echolalic scripts or gestalts. For example: If a child watches a scene where a character says, ā€œLet’s go on an adventure!ā€ they might say that every time they want to go outside — even though they’re not directly referencing the movie anymore. In this case Dylan is reciting a scene from trash trucks episode ā€œMint choco Boomā€ #gestalt #gestalttherapy #echolaliclanguage #gestaltlanguageprocessing #gestaltlanguageprocessors

This is not meant to be diagnostic, this is simply to show an example of what an autistic child can sound like! Also, this kind of speech is definitely not typical to non-autistic children. My current 3 year old talked absolutely nothing like this. But when Abby was 2, she was our first child, and it was 2020. šŸ™ƒ We hadn’t heard other 2 year olds talk and hadn’t seen her around other kids her age enough to realize how atypical her speech patterns were! Gestalt language processing isn’t exclusive to autism, nor are all autistic children going to be GLPs. However, there is a very strong correlation. GLP is a very natural way to develop language and doesn’t need to be corrected. But it IS different, and helping a GLP develop communicative language is going to be different than helping an analytical processor (the non-GLP path to language development). If you aren’t familiar with gestalt language processing, you aren’t alone! I actually first discovered it on Instagram myself. If your child sounds exactly like my Abby in these clips, maybe check out these pages to learn more about gestalt language processing: @meaningfulspeech @natural.language.acquisition @jesstheslp @bohospeechie @thechildledslp @lotusbloomspeech There are tons of others but you are only allowed to tag so many people in one reel and I also am terrible at recalling people’s Instagram names. šŸ˜… Tag your favorite GLP account in the comments! #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autism #autismmom #autismparent #specialeducation #specialeducationteacher #teacher #sped #spedteacher #slp #ot #aba #speechtherapist #abatherapy #neurodiversity #neurodiversityaffirming #neurodivergent #neurodiverse #adhd #gestalt #gestaltlanguageprocessing #latetalker #naturallanguageacquisition #echolalia #languagedevelopment

A child in the earlier stages of gestalt language processing may sound clear and easy to understand… and then suddenly their words seem jumbled together. Is this something to worry about? Absolutely not. This is a reason to get excited. This shift often means the child’s gestalts are becoming more flexible. They’re experimenting—mixing/matching gestalts, and even beginning to add grammatical components as their language system is becoming more flexible. Here’s how to support a child in this stage šŸ‘‡ • Mirror back the words you did understand • Don’t interject or guess—this can interrupt their language processing • Watch for gestures or object cues to gather meaning • Clinicians: always ask caregivers for input and context āļø In summary: Listen. Validate. Stay curious. Investigate. This is not a step backward. It’s language under construction. #GestaltLanguageProcessing #GLP #NeuroaffirmingSLP #ChildLedCommunication #LanguageDevelopment

Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) is a way some children — especially many autistic children — develop languagešŸ—£ļø Instead of learning language word-by-word (ā€œI,ā€ ā€œwant,ā€ ā€œcookieā€), gestalt processors learn in chunks or ā€œscriptsā€-meaningful phrases they’ve heard before, like: ā€œLet’s go outside!ā€ or ā€œTime to clean up!ā€ These chunks, called ā€œgestalts,ā€ are memorized with their emotional or situational meaning attached. Over time, children naturally break these phrases down into smaller parts and begin creating their own original sentencesšŸ’• 🌈 The 6 Stages of Gestalt Language Development šŸ’œStage 1: Whole Gestalts / Echolalia • The child uses long memorized scripts or phrases. • Examples: ā€œAre you okay?ā€ (when they mean they’re hurt), ā€œLet’s go!ā€ (when they want to leave). • These phrases carry meaning for the child even if they don’t match the exact situation. šŸ’œStage 2: Mitigations (Mixing and Matching) • The child begins to take apart and combine pieces of their gestalts. • Example: From ā€œLet’s go outsideā€ and ā€œGo to bed,ā€ they might say ā€œGo outside.ā€ šŸ’œStage 3: Single Words and New Combinations • The child starts to use single words and original short combinations. • Example: ā€œWant snack,ā€ ā€œGo park.ā€ šŸ’œStage 4: Original Phrases and Simple Grammar • The child begins using new phrases they create themselves with early grammar. • Example: ā€œI want juice,ā€ ā€œMommy is home.ā€ šŸ’œStage 5: Complex Grammar and Sentences • The child now uses more complete grammar and can adjust sentences. • Example: ā€œI wanted juice but we ran out. šŸ’œStage 6: Flexible, Creative Language Use • The child communicates original thoughts with full grammar, emotion, and flexibility. • Example: ā€œI was sad when we couldn’t go to the park, but I felt better after snack time.ā€ Type Gestalt ā¬‡ļø and I will send you some online resources šŸ©µšŸ©·šŸ’ššŸ’› #neurodiversity #disabilityparenting #advocate #autism #autismacceptance #autismawareness #speechtherapy #speechdelay #gestaltlanguageprocessing #gestaltlanguagelearner

Mikko has learned quite a bit since we first got her Autism diagnosis. That was over 3 years ago if you can believe it! She will be 5 next month and has gone from no words to being able to say a full sentence (even if I can’t understand it) she is able to use words more, along with hand leading, pointing, pictures, gestures, cues and her AAC device. She actively utilizes all of these things DAILY. Some days she will only grunt and hand lead but I’ve found my way around understanding her through routine and patience. A new question we get around communication with Mikko has been about GLP (Gestalt Language Processing) A nonverbal autistic child may also be a gestalt language processor. They might use AAC or vocalizations to repeat scripts or phrases they’ve heard. Their speech might be limited, but their brains still process language in gestalts. This is something new we are learning about when it comes to Mikko. Nonetheless, we are so proud of how much she has grown and grasped over the years! ā¤ļø #asd #autism #autismawareness #adhd #autismacceptance #specialneeds #autismfamily #autistic #autismspectrum #neurodiversity #autismmom #autismspectrumdisorder #autismlife #autismsupport #mentalhealth #neurodivergent #aspergers #autismlove #autismparents #disability #specialeducation #inclusion #aba #love #actuallyautistic #autismo #parenting #anxiety #autismcommunity #autismparent

Do you know what babbling looks like on an AAC device? It’s okay to let a child babble on their device! We know a lot about the importance of babbling when it comes to speaking with our mouths, but we don’t hear about the importance of allowing a child to babble on their AAC device. Oftentimes, this is looked at as meaningless or that the child isn’t interested in using the device in a ā€œfunctionalā€ way or ā€œisn’t readyā€ for a robust sperch generating system. However, that is not the case. We need to allow AAC users the same opportunity to babble and explore. Learning to use an AAC device, is just like learning a new language. If you’re supporting a child who may benefit from AAC and it hasn’t been introduced yet, NOW is the time to get your child or student started with robust speech generating devices because most popular AAC apps are on MAJOR sale! āļø @prcsaltillo apps are on sale Oct 15th-28th: Touchchat with WordPower, LAMP Words for Life, Dialogue AAC & Unity AAC are all 50% off! āļø @assistiveware apps are on sale Oct 8th-15th: Proloquo, Proloquo2Go, Proloquo4Text & Pictello are all 50% off! āļø @avaz.app is on sale October 8th-15th! I see soooo much about Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) on social media and also a lot of comments from people wondering why their SLT has never mentioned it. I thought I would share a little insight into the controvosy behind it today as I don’t believe parents are actually aware of the debate us SLT’s are having behind closed doors! This is in noooo way to say that those very pro GLP are wrong because I don’t think they are. Nor do I think us SLTs taking the middle ground or even those who are completely against it are wrong! We can only work with what we have until we have more research and more evidence. Until then, I think we will all continue to have mixed opinions! What we do all have in common as SLTs however, is that we will always do our very best to support children and their families using our knowledge and skills and the evidence that we do have. Even if our opinions and approaches slightly differ…there is no one size fits all ā¤ļø #gestalt #glp #speechtherapy #gestaltlanguageprocessing #autism

"When I acknowledged and validated, that was communication" šŸ¤ā   Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) is a way of developing language. Instead of building language word by word from the beginning, some children GLP children may use chunks or "wholes" of language (called gestalts). We spoke to Grainne Carney (@thegestaltmum) about her experience as a mother to a Gestalt Language Processor and why GLP is a valid and natural way to learn language, the unique beauty and connection that is born from through this form of language development, why traditional speech therapy may not support GLP, and the need to recognise GLP. #gestaltlanguageprocessing #glp #languagedevelopment #parenting

Does your child repeat lines from TV shows, songs, movies, or previous conversations? If so, they are likely a Gestalt Language Processor. āœ… Children who communicate this way have rich intonation and do not always respond well to traditional speech therapy. āœ… Because they acquire language in chunks or scripts, they need a special approach. āœ… Gestalt Language Processing is a typical way to acquire language. It is not a disorder! Does your child acquire language this way? āœ… I’ve created a guide for you to help your child in all 6 stages of Natural Language Acquisition (the framework that supports Gestalt Language Processors), even if you don’t have access to speech therapy. āœ… Please note that speech therapist with an SLP trained in Natural Language Acquisition is ideal! This book is not a substitute for speech, but I continually receive messages from parents on long waitlists. This e-book will help you help your child today! āœ… Comment the word STAGES for a link!!! *Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) describes gestalt language development, and is based on early research (A Peters, B Prizant, 1983) + 15 years of clinical research that validates it in a large group of primarily-autistic children. Is It Echolalia or Something More? Understanding Gestalt Language Does your child repeat movie lines, jingles, or full scripts before saying simple words like ā€œjuice, pleaseā€? That’s not ā€œjust echolaliaā€ā€”it could be gestalt language processing. It’s a valid, meaningful way of learning to communicate. And no, it’s not something to fix. 🌟 Gestalt learners use chunks of language packed with emotion and intent. 🌟 Most traditional speech therapy overlooks their needs. 🌟 But with the right support, they can move from scripts to spontaneous speech—without being silenced. #GestaltLanguageProcessing #Echolalia #Communication #SpeechTherapy #SLP #LanguageDevelopment #GestaltProcessing #Neurodivergent #neurodiversity #DifferentNotLess
