CATime (literally) Flies. Some great memories from 2 years ago.
I’ve been flying for 42 years, always with aircraft powered by 4, 2, or at least 1 engine. Never before have I felt the purity and freedom of gliding.
Soaring like a bird, accompanied only by the sound of the wind and the cheerful beeps of the variometer whenever we found a thermal—a bubble of rising air—was an incredible experience. We would bank the glider into the thermal and ride it upward for as long as possible.
My instructor and friend, Andrew @flight_deck_wingman is a competitive glider pilot with unquestionable skill. His instructional patter was perfectly tailored to my background, reminding me of the aerodynamics involved in gliding and filling in the gaps in my meteorological knowledge.
Andrew hired this stunning Duo Discus glider from @lashamgliding My daughter joined me for the day and was introduced to gliding by Jordan @soaringglider , one of the UK’s best instructors.
As you can see, the whole experience was incredible, and I’m definitely need to take this up. I’ve got 42 years of carbon offsetting to make up for.
I hope this Reel inspires you to try gliding. There are gliding clubs all over the world. It’s the cheapest way to learn to fly and undoubtedly the purest.

YLMy flight instructor in the south of France is also an aerobatic pilot. He performed shows with his Salto and always knew exactly what he was doing. He taught me what it means to fly with finesse and precision. I'm grateful to have had such an instructor, from whom I learned mountain flying and to always have respect for it.

Many people think gliding is a fun recreational activity for young kids - and to an extend it is!
What’s more important: Gliding is immense responsibility, even if you’re not touching a plane yourself. The winch operator, tow pilot, flight controller, wing runners and many others are directly responsible for the pilots life.
Especially the wing runners are often overlooked. They are the airfields “crew resource managers”, making sure the pilot is ready to launch and at attention. They are sometimes also responsible for the ground handling, attaching the towing cable to the glider. Furthermore, they serve as an important traffic control safety net, monitoring the immediate surrounding and the sky above. In addition, they are in the best position to monitor the process of the cable retraction, often functioning as a signpost both for pilot and flight controllers using hand signs. Last but not least: they have to be physically fit to carry the wing as long as they can as the plane accelerates, making sure to keep the wings leveled as long as possible to ensure maneuverability.
So the next time you’re at an airfield, make sure to focus on the wing-runners performance and if you’re the pilot: thank them properly! It’s your life they’re carrying in your hands!
