Springtails are tiny little creatures that live in soil and other damp, dark places, and they are usually detritivores, meaning they eat decaying plant matter, including but not limited to pollen, decaying roots, and fungi. Literally the diet of a fairy. Springtails have the ability to spin faster than any other animal on earth and this is where their special fork comes in. It’s actually called a furcula, and it is like a rigid tail that they keep tucked underneath themselves and it’s what they use when they need to bounce – literally. The furcula is basically spring-loaded and so the springtail has to lock it in place with its tendons until it jumpin time. AMAZING. Personally I have never seen a cuter animal and so my heart COULD NOT handle it when I read this tidbit of an article about the difference between fleas and springtails. Who else here identifies as having a rounded, soft body and being easily crushed? That’s all this time, friends. Keep looking for the little things!
