GLKnown today as Gloucester Cathedral, this magnificent structure began its life in 1089 as St Peter’s Abbey, a Benedictine house rooted in Norman tradition. It has borne witness to extraordinary history—most notably, in 1216, when Henry III was crowned here, the only time a British monarch has been crowned outside London. By 1541, the abbey’s importance was secured when Henry VIII re-established it as a cathedral.
Much of the stunning Perpendicular Gothic architecture we see today owes its existence to a tragic royal story. In 1327, King Edward II met a brutal end at nearby Berkeley Castle. His body was brought here to St Peter’s Abbey for burial. Around 1330, his son, Edward III, commissioned a magnificent tomb, placing it on the north side of the Presbytery. Crafted in alabaster, it features one of England’s earliest royal effigies—the king crowned and holding a sceptre—set beneath a delicate, carved limestone canopy.
The tomb became a beacon of pilgrimage. Faithful flocked here, their offerings filling the abbey’s coffers and funding the building’s expansion. Even now, you can see ancient graffiti on the stone, signatures of visitors from as far back as the 1600s.
But death did not entirely silence the king’s story. Legend holds that on every anniversary of his death, September 21st, terrible cries echo from the room at Berkeley Castle where he met his fate. Within the cathedral itself, some claim his spirit lingers near his tomb, a presence steeped in profound sadness. There are also tales of white stags pulling his funeral carriage, a myth born perhaps to frame him as a martyr, adding a touch of magic to his tragic legacy.
Whether fact or folklore, Edward II’s story is woven into the very stones of this place. He is the king who, even in death, helped build the glory of Gloucester Cathedral. #gloucester #ghosttour #ghoststories #cathedral #royalfamily
