CLMathias Goeritz was born on April 4, 1915, in Gdanzk,German Empire. In1948 he moved to Spain and created the Altamira School, where he metMexican architect Ignacio Diaz Morales. The following year, at DiazMorales’ invitation, he moved to Mexico to teach in the newly created School of Architecture at the University of Guadalajara.
In 1952, with the support of the industrialist Daniel Mont, he built theMuseo Experimental El ECO in Mexico City, a space dedicated to promoting and exhibiting new, emerging art forms. The museum had as much impact (and was as short lived) as the Cabaret Voltaire (Zurich,1916) on which it was inspired. The museum reopened after several decades, empty of most of its original objects, but structurally intact, with it its reference to Fritz Lang’s set designs.
At Clásicos Mexicanos we have recovered the original chairs that he designed for the museum. The low, ECO 001 Chair, designed for the auditorium, the taller 002 version he made for his own desk, and the upholstered 003 canteen green, grey and orange chairs, whose frame draws on the shape of his sculpture La Serpiente, originally made for the museum’s patio.

LA#Loret. Una instalación de balones de futbol ponchados convertidos en macetas, concebida por Rodrigo Ímaz, hijo de @claudia_shein, comparte espacio desde este viernes en el Jardín Escultórico del Museo de Arte Moderno con obras de Juan Soriano, Mathias Goeritz y Vicente Rojo, entre otros.

FOFighting for Leo, the lion! #SaveSudanAnimals
Together with Dr Frank Goeritz from IZW Leibniz, Dr Amir Khalil and his team tirelessly worked all day after their arrival at Sudan Animal Rescue to save all the wild animals, immediately focussing on the weakest. One of them was lion Leo, who was found lying in a dusty pit inside one of the enclosures being absolutely non-responsive. The sight of his bony, starved body caught them off guard. Action had to be taken as quickly as possible and so Leo got an emergency treatment right away, including an urgent infusion on the spot.
“It is saddening to see how much suffering these animals had to endure due to the ongoing conflicts and challenging situation in Sudan”, reflects FOUR PAWS CEO Josef Pfabigan, who was deeply shocked when the team informed him about the situation on-site.
At this point, we all hoped for a miracle. Wishing for a small improvement and to be able to get Leo and all the other animals trapped in Khartoum out of there... They all deserve a better life. A bright future. A safer place to live in!
