Ever wanted to ride along on a prescribed burn operation? Or see what it looks like FROM ABOVE?! You're in luck! Tag along with our Southern Wisconsin Burn Crew and longtime TNC volunteers at a recent prescribed fire at the Pine Hollow preserve in the Baraboo Hills. Photographer and licensed drone operator Kevin Sink was there to capture the action, including some very cool video from the air. A total of 57 acres were treated with fire, on a woodland area where oaks were planted 25 years ago to help restore the canopy in the area. The fire will help knock back thicker underbrush that can crowd out diverse native species that need more sunlight to thrive. The use of prescribed fire dates back thousands of years and is one of the vital tools in the toolbox for keeping Wisconsin's ecosystems healthy. (Video footage by @KevinSinkPhotography)

Fire days are long and don’t end after ignition is complete. #Newstudy on bobwhites out of @talltimbersresearch focused on chick ecology. They tagged chicks ~12 days old and tracked them into the fall. This is a difficult life stage to study, especially in this species (the difficulties showed in this study as a large number of tagged birds had unknown fates). Thus not much has been published on bobwhite chick ecology. Only 22% made it 4 months. Of the known fates, predation was the most common loss. This population is in an intensively managed landscape with aggressive habitat management, predator control, and supplemental feeding so it is likely that chick survival is often low and other adaptations allow quail populations to overcome it (they have a tremendous quail population despite the low chick survival). I was really surprised to see that snake predation was just behind avian in leading cause of loss. Would you have thought corn snakes would be the primary snake culprit?!? The authors opined that this may be compensatory predation because of the mammal predator removal shifting the relative importance of predator guilds. In other words, remove one predator and chicks just get eaten by something else.
