In a significant leap for the field of quantum computing, Google has reportedly engineered a quantum computer that can execute calculations in mere moments that would take the world’s most advanced supercomputers nearly half a century to process. Google’s latest iteration of its quantum machine, the Sycamore quantum processor, currently holds 70 qubits. This is a substantial leap from the 53 qubits of its earlier version. This makes the new processor approximately 241 million times more robust than the previous model. As each qubit can exist in a state of zero, one, or both simultaneously, the capability of storing and processing this level of quantum information is an achievement that even the fastest classical computer, however rapid or slow, cannot match. Microsoft just made a massive breakthrough that will change technology forever. It’s called the Majorana 1, a quantum chip that’s the first of its kind in quantum computing. And what this thing can do is absolutely insane. Imagine a world where you could invent concrete that could heal itself. Or you could design a phone battery that could be charged one time, and then never run out of juice. That sounds like science fiction, but it’s not. This chip is gonna make it possible with quantum computing. Here’s how quantum computing works (ELI5). Imagine the process to invent the material for an infinite battery was actually a giant maze. If you solve the maze, you invent the formula for a new battery technology. A normal computer would have to try every single pathway in the maze, one at a time. And it could take centuries to find the right path all the way through. But a quantum computer works differently, because it can try every single path in the maze at the same time. This is essentially the difference between a bit and a qubit (the quantum bits that power quantum computers) Now this new Majorana chip has an architecture that can sustain up to 1 million qubits at the same time. That’s 1 million different pathways through the maze, every moment, until it’s solved. And what this means, is pretty incredible. When a scientist goes into a lab to create a material or a design new drug, they won’t need to run experiments. Because this chip will just give them the right answer the very first time. And It’s hard to wrap your head around what this means, but essentially, it’s new medicines, new iPhone screens that can never crack, new metals for planes that fly at supersonic speeds. Everything will change because of quantum computers. And we just entered the Quantum Era. Google has just announced a major breakthrough in the world of quantum computing. Remember their Willow quantum chip that they unveiled in December of last year? Well. For the first time in HISTORY,  Willow has demonstrated the first-ever algorithm to achieve verifiable quantum advantage on hardware, surpassing even the fastest classical supercomputers (13,000x faster). It can compute the structure of a molecule, and paves a path towards real-world applications. You might remember that back in 2019, Google famously demonstrated that a quantum computer could solve a problem that would take the fastest classical supercomputer thousands of years. Today’s breakthrough moves us much closer to quantum computers that can drive major discoveries in areas like medicine and materials science. Now there is debate in the quantum community, whether this is all just marketing speak or a real step towards quantum supremacy. I’m merely an enthusiast, certainly not an expert, so I am definitely not smart enough to weight in. But at the very worse, this means more excitement and funding for physics research, which I think is a great thing. Google just announced a crazy new quantum computing chip. It can solve a problem in 5 minutes that would take one of the fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years! BUT that problem was a “benchmark” problem called RCS, chosen specifically because it’s extremely hard for a supercomputer - which are still better at basically everything practical. The real reason you should care about quantum computers and this new chip is less about beating supercomputers at things they’re already great at and more about doing new things - like really accurate simulations of nature at a quantum level that could be used for drug discovery or battery development or more.
