The American West might have the best road trips in the world, but most people don’t know where to start. Here are 3 very different options: mountains, desert, and ocean.
Mountains – Sierra Nevada Parks Loop 🏔️
Fly into Sacramento or Fresno and loop Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia.
Parks you visit: Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia National Park.
What you’ll see: Granite cliffs, alpine meadows, some of the tallest waterfalls in the country, and the biggest trees on earth. Spend about 7 days between Yosemite’s famous views, underrated Kings Canyon, and 2 full days walking among giant sequoias.
Desert – Ancient Ruins and Red Rock Loop 🌵
Base your trip in the Four Corners region (Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado).
Stops: Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, Chaco Culture, Mesa Verde.
What you’ll see: Iconic mesas and buttes, a Navajo‑led jeep tour on the floor of Canyon de Chelly, and some of the most impressive ancient ruins in North America. At Chaco and Mesa Verde, you can stand inside or even climb ladders into cliff dwellings. Plan around 6 days.
Ocean – Oregon Coast Road Trip 🌊
Drive the Oregon coast north to south (or reverse).
Stops: Multiple state parks, lighthouses, sea stack viewpoints, and beach towns.
What you’ll see: Pristine beaches, dramatic cliffs, rock arches and sea stacks jutting out of the Pacific, classic lighthouses in the mist, and tidepools with sea life like purple shore crabs. Add a whale‑watching cruise or a crabbing trip to round it out over 6 days.
