There is something deeply grounding about the quiet moments at a Shinto shrine, especially when watching a priest or priestess carefully brush dark, flowing calligraphy over a vibrant red seal.
This is my new goshuin from Sumiyoshi-taisha in Osaka, and it is a beautiful reminder of a truly peaceful day. ⛩️✨
For those who might not know, a goshuin is not just a tourist stamp, it is a sacred record of your visit, a symbol of the connection made with the enshrined deities, and a work of art unique to the person holding the brush.
Sumiyoshi-taisha is one of Japan's oldest shrines, founded in the 3rd century long before Buddhism even arrived in the country.
Because of this, it features a very rare style of shrine architecture called Sumiyoshi-zukuri, characterized by straight roofs without the upward curve you see at most other shrines.
A few things that make this place so special:
The Deities of the Sea: The shrine is dedicated to the Sumiyoshi Sanjin (gods of the sea and sailing) and Empress Jingu. For centuries, sailors, travelers, and fishermen have come here to pray for safe voyages. 🌊
The Taiko-bashi (Drum Bridge): Before reaching the main grounds, you cross an incredibly steep, beautiful red bridge reflecting over the water. The physical effort of walking over the steep arch is said to cleanse you of impurities before you approach the gods.
A Forest in the City: Despite being in the bustling city of Osaka, the shrine grounds are an oasis of towering ancient trees, stone lanterns, and quiet paths.
