Cats with a tabby coat pattern usually have a little pattern across their foreheads resembling the letter M, or a broken up version of one. Nora has more of a torbie and white coat as she has quite a bit of orange and white in amongst her tabbiness! There are many sweet myths and legends surrounding the origin of this M, including that it stands for Mau, the ancient Egyptian word for cat. It’s actually simply down to the tabby patterning gene but I love researching all the different stories about features of cats like this one. Do you have a story about the tabby ‘M’? #tabbykittens #tabby #tabbycats #tabbycatsofinstagram kittensoninstagram

1. Tabbies Were Named After a Baghdad Silk Tabby cats got their name by being compared to silk from the “Attabiy” district in Baghdad, and the 14th century Middle French term for it was “atabis,” which then became “tabis,” and eventually our English word, “tabby.” 2. Tabby Is Not a Cat Breed Tabbies are not an actual breed, but rather, the name is a way to describe the unique markings on their coats that set them apart. So “tabby cat” refers to a category of cats, not a recognized breed. 3. Tabbies Have a Characteristic “M” on Their Foreheads Countless legends surround the characteristic “M” that tabby cats have on their foreheads. However, the explanation lies within the genes. Essentially, the tabby pattern comes in the cat’s DNA, and the “M” marking is a part of the pattern. 4. Tabby Cats Come in Many Coat Colors The most familiar tabby coats are black, but there are variations in the pigment, resulting in black, orange, and gray tabbies. Interestingly, orange tabby cats are usually male (about 20-25% of orange tabby cats are female). 5. Tabby Cats Have Five Unique Patterns Classic tabbies have bold, swirling patterns, mackerel tabbies have narrow stripes, and spotted tabbies have large or small spots. Ticked tabbies don’t have stripes or spots, but instead, have tabby markings on the face and agouti hairs (hairs with more than one band of color) on the body. Patched tabbies can show any one of the previous patterns, with the markings usually more apparent on the legs and head. #cat #petsagram #aivideo #viralreels

🐾 Grey Tabby Cats: More Than Just Pretty Stripes! Did you know that “tabby” isn’t actually a breed? It’s a coat pattern that appears in many different cat breeds! Grey tabbies are especially loved for their beautiful stripes, swirls, and adorable “M” marking on their foreheads. Let’s explore what makes them so fascinating. ✨ 🐱 Different Tabby Patterns Grey tabbies come in several unique patterns: • Classic Tabby – Bold swirls that look like marble patterns. • Mackerel Tabby – Narrow stripes running down the body like fish bones. • Spotted Tabby – Spots instead of stripes, giving a wild-cat look. • Ticked Tabby – Very subtle pattern where each hair has multiple colors. 🧬 The Genetics Behind the Stripes That famous “M” marking on a tabby’s forehead is a signature feature! It appears because of the agouti gene, which controls how pigment is distributed along each hair strand. This gene is dominant, which is why tabby patterns are so common in cats. 🐾 Popular Breeds That Can Have Grey Tabby Coats Many beloved cat breeds can show this pattern, including: • American Shorthair – Known for their friendly personality and strong build. • British Shorthair – Calm, plush-coated cats with round faces. • Maine Coon – One of the largest domestic cat breeds with fluffy tails and gentle personalities. 💡 Fun Fact: Every tabby cat’s stripe pattern is unique—like a fingerprint! No two tabbies have exactly the same design. #cat #reelsvideoシ #cats

If you’ve ever looked at your pet and thought, “There is definitely a tiny human in a fur suit living in my house,” this video is for you! 😹 We are kicking off this uncanny collection with a tuxedo cat who isn’t just sitting at the dinner table—he’s presiding over it with his paws folded like he’s waiting for his tax return to be filed. 📑 Then we meet the “Perfect Gentleman,” a ginger tabby perched on a bathroom sink with his legs crossed so politely you’d expect him to offer you some sage life advice. The “main character energy” continues with a tabby slumped on the couch, legs out, staring at the TV like he just finished a 40-hour work week, followed by a kitty who literally says “ow” while getting her nails clipped (the drama!). 💅 From a white cat sitting perfectly upright like a concerned parent to a stray tucked behind a car tire with his arms crossed like a bouncer at an exclusive club, these felines have officially abandoned their four-legged roots. 🙅‍♂️ We even catch a ginger cat holding hands with his human and a kitten lounging in his litter box like it’s a poolside cabana, proving that whether they’re standing on two legs to play with a toy or just judging your life choices from across the room, the human takeover has officially begun.

Not all tabby coats have the same pattern! Even though both String Bean and Gravy Boat are orange tabbies, they have different patterns: Gravy Boat is a mackerel tabby (thin stripes) and String Bean is a classic tabby (with a swirl)—which makes it very easy for any tabby connoisseur to tell them apart! Cassie is also a type of tabby. Her color is torbie…but what kind of pattern do you think she has? 🌀 P.S. Other tabby types include ticked (agouti hair) and spotted (with spots.) Do you have a tabby? What kind of coat pattern do they have?
