This calming Gregorian chant is over 1,000 years old. The music was originally passed through generations via the oral tradition; only later was it notated in the system presented here known as neumes.
Its searching melody reflects the yearning quality of the text:
“Make thy face to shine upon thy servant, and save me in thy mercy;
O Lord, let me not be confounded, for I have called upon thee”
We performed two polyphonic interpretations of this chant by Isaac and Gesualdo while touring the French Alps last week.

Before today’s staves and noteheads, church musicians used this system to bring chant to life in churches and cathedrals. It’s still read and sung in services today! ⛪︎
This ancient prayer, Da pacem Domine, has echoed in churches like this for over a millennium. Its meandering melody has inspired composers across the centuries, from Brumel in the 16th century to Arvo Pärt in the 21st 🎶
