⌭ The science of grounding ⠀ Grounding, also called earthing, is a therapeutic activity that electrically reconnects you to the earth. It might sound “out there”, but there’s actually loads of fascinating science to back it up. ⠀ Humans are bioelectrical beings that carry a positive charge, which can build up in our bodies. Earth carries a negative charge. By making direct contact with the earth, we discharge our excess energy producing healing effects at the cellular level. Grounding physicists hypothesize that grounding affects the living matrix of the body, which is the central connector between cells (some believe this is one of the ways acupuncture works as well). ⠀ Research shows a measurable improvement in blood chemistry, pain, immune response & inflammation after just short periods of grounding. It has also been shown to improve symptoms of chronic fatigue, anxiety & depression, sleep disorders and cardiovascular health. ⠀ So... How does one ground? NATURE, GROUNDING & THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD• - A while back, I released an episode of the Huberman Lab Podcast which was a “Foundational Fitness Protocol” for immediate and long term health. It is essentially three days a week of resistance training, and three days, a week of cardiovascular training, and one day a week of dedicated deliberate cold and heat exposure. (You can find all the details for zero cost at hubermanlab.com. Just simply search “optimal fitness protocol”. We also have a zero cost newsletter that summarizes it: see the menu tab; newsletter). - In the protocol, I describe one of the most important parts of my week is to get outside on Sunday and move as much as possible *in nature*. Sometimes that’s a run, sometimes it’s a hike sometimes that’s a ruck. Sometimes I do that alone, sometimes I do that with people. - The point is to get outside into nature and move, weather permitting. - Many people have asked me about practices like grounding, or forest bathing, etc. They have also asked about negative ions and their role in human health. As I explain in this post, there are some studies exploring nature effects on various aspects of health ranging from blood pressure to mood, etc. HOWEVER, it’s very hard to control all the variables when exploring the role of say, “grounding”. So I wouldn’t wait for a clinical trial. That said, I think everyone intuitively understands the value of getting into nature.
