We caught the Grunion run last night in Dana Point which was super cool. It’s pretty remarkable seeing the beach totally normal and then all of a sudden thousands of fish appear. The females dig nests in the sand with their tales and at the same time the males fertilize the eggs. Have you ever had the chance to see this? 🐟

When you hit the beach, DON’T blast your bright lights before they even show up. You’re basically telling them “nah this ain’t safe” and they’ll ghost the whole beach 💀
There are scout grunion that come up first to check the vibe… if it’s packed with people and lights everywhere, they’re out. No run. No fun.
‼️ Best move: stay low, stay patient, and chill on the lights. You usually don’t even need them at first.
ONLY use your light when they’re already in full swing and stacked on the beach, and even then, use it sparingly.
Let’s keep it right so everyone eats… and the run keeps happening 🙏🔥

ORGrunion Run tonight! Tuesday 5/13/25 sometime between 9:50-11:50pm at Doheny State Beach. If you miss it, tomorrow night will be between 10:20pm-12:20. Tonight is no take which means don’t take them! Just enjoy the very cool sight of nature doing what she does.
These grunion come to shore for 4 nights during each full moon cycle to spawn before wiggling back into the ocean. This only happens in Southern California and slightly beyond so it’s a really cool sight that doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world!

And just another reason the “berm” needs to be breached. Because these grunion get washed up into the creek mouth and get stuck! Then they can potentially die and their offspring not survive. Grunion live in the ocean. NOT a creek mouth with urban runoff.

EVTonight’s the night! It’s the last grunion run until next spring. If you are in Southern California, make some time this week and try to catch a grunion run, one the most bizarre marine phenomena happening now.
The grunion fish has some strange mating behaviors. From March until August, synchronized with the full and new moon phases, the grunion fish leave the ocean in swarms to lay and fertilize eggs.
Any gently sloping sandy beach in SoCal is a good bet for witnessing this fish mating ritual. In Los Angeles county it doesn’t get better than Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro. The @californiadfw has a great grunion run prediction schedule and more information on this fantastic fish. Make sure you check their website out if you are interested in going.
