THA man once asked:
“Ya Rasulullah…
what is that one sin
that can take away years of worship?”
Because some sins…
don’t look dangerous.
They don’t feel heavy.
They don’t even stay in your life
for more than a few seconds.
A sentence.
A comment.
A piece of gossip.
You say it once…
and move on.
But the one you said it about?
They carry it for years.
A rumor you spread—
becomes their reputation.
A secret you exposed—
becomes their humiliation.
A few words from you—
become someone else’s lifelong wound.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“A person who has an
atom’s weight
of arrogance in his heart
will not enter Paradise.”
- Sahih Muslim
And the Prophet ﷺ described a scene
that is hard to forget:
“During the Night Journey,
I passed by people
who had copper nails
with which they were scratching
their faces and chests.
I asked: ‘Who are these, O Jibreel?’
He said:
‘These are the ones
who used to eat the flesh of people
and attack their honor.’”
→ (Abu Dawood, Hasan)
This wasn’t random.
“Eating the flesh of people”…
is how backbiting is described.
Because Allah Himself says:
“Would one of you like
to eat the flesh of his dead brother?
You would hate it.”
→ (Qur’an 49:12)
Meaning—
when you talk about someone
behind their back…
tear their respect…
expose what they trusted you with…
It’s not “just الكلام”.
In the sight of Allah—
it is as disgusting
as eating the flesh
of your own dead brother.
And then he ﷺ said:
“The bankrupt from my Ummah
is the one who comes on the Day of Judgment
with prayer, fasting, and charity—
but he insulted this one,
slandered that one,
and wronged others…
So his good deeds are taken
and given to them…”
→ (Sahih Muslim)
Think about that.
You prayed.
You fasted.
You made dua.
But your tongue…
gave it all away.
So it’s not always
the major sins
that destroy you.
Sometimes—
it’s the words
you didn’t think twice about.
✨ “Ya Allah… protect my tongue, and don’t let me hurt others while trying to come closer to You.”
Because one sentence from you…
can break someone for years.
And on that Day—
they won’t need to argue.
Your deeds
will speak for them.
