Hakone, located a few hours from Tokyo, is a perfect getaway offering unique experiences. It's natural beauty, hot Springs, views of mount Fuji along with these unique food experiences make it a must visit in your trip to Japan! Starting with the 400 year old tea house, Amazake Chaya, we tried their amazake - a drink nothing like I've tried before. Served warm, perfect for the chilly weather outside. It was sweet and slightly thick in consistency. Rice cakes were soft and chewy. To enjoy these homely rice cakes with amazake sitting inside a centuries old establishment, breathing in the crisp fresh air was one of my most loved experiences in our recent trip to Japan. Our next stop was for lunch - we joined the queue outside the Owakudani station restaurant. There are seats by the window, allowing you to enjoy your meal looking at the vents releasing sulphurous gas: which would be a very smelly experience if done outside. We ordered owakudani black curry with katsu, which turned out to be a very fulfilling meal. Black curry is unique to hakone area, it was moderately spicy, but full of flavour tying the plain white rice and pork katsu nicely together. We then decided to try the famous black eggs of Hakone. These are just normal eggs, boiled in sulphurous hot spring water, turning them black. They didn't taste any different from a hard boiled egg. They are sold in packets of four - assuming each pack had one egg, we bought two packs, to find out we've got eight black eggs to share between two😂 Locals believe eating one black egg adds 7 years to your life🤩 To complete the experience we tried Owakudani's charcoal ice cream as well. I'm not completely sure but it's said they use volcanic ashes to make this ice cream! Eating it was fun 😁 I've only talked about food here, but Hakone is a unique, beautiful place to visit. This is a must visit destination in your next trip to Japan! (a super popular travel destination) I was recently invited to join a tour of the Kanagawa West area & want to share some of the highlights of the trip ⛩️ 1 - Hakone Shrine One of Japan’s most iconic shrines, this is where you’ll find the giant tori gate in front of Lake Ashi!⛩️ 2 - Hotel De Yama You can enjoy Japanese dishes like sushi, sukiyaki or grilled steak at the hotel restaurant while taking in a great view of Lake Ashi *menu is seasonal so may be different 3 - Cruise along Lake Ashi Take a ferry across the lake to get a different perspective of Hakone Shrine! Also a convenient way to travel around Hakone! *During the actual tour, it may be the ropeway instead of the cruise - is weather dependent 4 - Amazake Chaya Tea House A 400 year old teahouse steeped in tradition, located in the mountains. It was used as a rest stop for travelers using the pathway connecting Kyoto to Edo (modern day Tokyo). I recommend ordering the chikara mochi & a hot amazake to replenish your energy! ✨ 5 - Daiyuzan Saijoji Temple Experience a once in a lifetime stay at a temple with over 600 years of history together with the monks who live there. You will get to stay in a traditional Japanese room, zazen practice(meditate), eat kaiseki food (traditional buddhist cuisine), sutra, hike to the top of the mountain in the temple & have the ultimate Japan experience! This time, I used the Hakone Freepass by Odakyu and discovered some of the most amazing, still unexplored spots of Hakone. 🥹🥹 🎫: Hakone Freepass Save money with unlimited travel on 8 different forms of transportation, bringing you seamlessly from Shinjuku Station to your favorite spots around Hakone. Digital tickets are available so no more losing your paper tickets! (Like I do all the time 🥹) 🏨: I stayed at the amazing Hakone Hatsuhana located at Hakone-Yumoto. All rooms come with a private onsen♨️, perfect for those who value privacy and need some top-notch relaxation. 🥩: For lunch, I recommend Gyunabe Ukon, where you can savor delicious Wagyu hotpot by the riverside. 🍵: My best discovery this time was Amasakechaya, a tea house that served daimyo, samurai and travelers as a resting stop on the old Tokaido route since the Edo period.
