[Must Try] โ€ฆ I shared this exercise a few months back, but I wanted to re-share it because Iโ€™ve become an even bigger fan now that Iโ€™ve programmed it (and received feedback from dozens of clients and lifters worldwide) for over a year. . Hereโ€™s 3 reasons why these โ€œInverted/Bodyweight Swinging Leg Curlsโ€ have become a staple in my programming: . 1๏ธโƒฃ They train BOTH functions of the hamstrings [hip extension & knee flexion] . 2๏ธโƒฃ The contraction/stimulus on the MUSCLE is intense, yet itโ€™s extremely easy on the joints & low-back . 3๏ธโƒฃ It allows you to train knee flexion [at home] without having to spend thousands of dollars on a Leg Curl Machine. (Plus, it doesnโ€™t take up any space in my home gym :)) . ๐Ÿ“PROGRAMMING NOTE: Once you build up enough strength to be able to execute 3 sets of 12+ (pristine) reps, I recommend overloading this exercise by placing chain(s) over your waist, wearing a weight vest or applying band resistance. . If you do anything activeโ€ฆ โœ…SAVE this.ย  Strong hamstrings help propel us forward, lift things, and move with speed! Hamstring strains make up a LARGE portion of sports injuries. 1/3 of hamstring strains will likely recur within the first 2 weeks of being back in play! In running, most hamstring strains happen during terminal swing, or when the leg is behind you. It has to be trained to properly handle high eccentric load to stay safe. Eccentric strength is the strength required to decelerate. โšก๏ธThey need to be strong, but also need to be flexible. A lot of hamstring strains happen when the hip is flexed and knee is extended, often seen in dancing or kicking. So while bridges and hamstring curls are great exercises, they should not be the ONLY exercises. ๐ŸŽ–Honorable mentions: kickstand/SL RDL, seated tantrums, Nordic ham curls!! โฌ‡๏ธHere's are some options to load up the hamstrings in different ways, where the hip is moving on a fixed knee, or vice versa. 1๏ธโƒฃ Bridge + walkout 2๏ธโƒฃ Multiangle SL bridge hip 3๏ธโƒฃ tempo kicks + resisted drags 4๏ธโƒฃ 1/2 kneel slides [+resistance] โš ๏ธ None of these should hurt. Variability in training this muscle is important to prepare it for al the cool things it does for us. Play with positioning, tempo, volume, and load! Donโ€™t forget about NERVE mobility. Engage your abs to stabilize your pelvis and prevent your hips from lifting โœ… Control the tempo. Avoid using momentum; lift and lower the weight in a CONTROLLED manner to keep tension on the hamstrings โœ… Flex your ankles- if you point toes away (planterflexion) this isnโ€™t necessarily wrong but it will reduce calf involvement. I donโ€™t mind using my calves as well so I pull my toes towards me. But honestly you can try both and see what feels best for you! Try this instead!โฌ‡๏ธ Dumbbell hamstring curls are great because they force you to control the weight and feel your hamstrings throughout the entire movement, otherwise if you forcefully go too high or too low when doing these, youโ€™ll drop the weight on your butt or on the floor, so a slower controlled motion is necessary. When doing the hamstring curl machine, I see SO many people throwing the pad around into their butt with their hips shooting up and theyโ€™re using so much other muscles to complete the reps.. donโ€™t be this person.. but if you need a reminder on how to do these correctly.. go check out my previous form video on them! Now with dumbbell hamstring curls, the form remains the same, but hereโ€™s a few tipsโฌ‡๏ธ โ–ถ๏ธForm Tips โœ…Start with the tops of your knees up against the pad, this position may vary a little person to person but try to start and this and see what feels best for you โœ…Keep your hips pushing into the pad, think about squeezing your glutes to help keep your hips tucked โœ…Squeeze your toes together to help secure the dumbbell โœ…Control the weight throughout the entire motion not going tooo high or tooo low. Youโ€™ll feel it when your not stable and balanced between legs so be intentional with your movement You can also do these laying directly on the ground, youโ€™ll just get a little less range of motion, but they also work too!
