TAI’ve been seeing more yarn shops close their doors lately.
And a few hand dyers quietly step away from their businesses.
And if I’m honest, it makes me pause.
So much time.
So much risk.
So much heart poured into something that started as love for fiber and turned into a full, brave leap.
The economy shifts. Seasons change. Life evolves.
But what doesn’t change is the impact they’ve had.
Local yarn stores were never just stores.
They were gathering places. Encouragement. Community bulletin boards.
They were the first place many of us touched hand-dyed yarn and thought, oh… this is different.
And the hand dyers — the ones experimenting late at night, testing color after color, pouring themselves into skeins — they’ve shaped what modern making looks like. They made yarn feel personal. Emotional. Artistic.
Because of them, so many of us learned to value slow craft.
To see yarn as more than material — but as comfort, expression, and connection.
If you’ve ever knit a sweater that carried you through a hard season,
or cast on something new because you needed a spark of joy,
you’ve felt that ripple effect.
I’m deeply grateful for the ones who came before us.
For the shop owners who unlocked the doors every morning.
For the dyers who kept experimenting until they found magic.
In my own small way, I’m honored to keep carrying that forward.
Hand-dyed yarn still matters.
Making still matters.
Community still matters.
