Here we are making a radial gutter splint in 2.4mm aquaplast. This is used to stabilise the index and middle finger while still allowing functional use of the hand. We commonly use this splint to treat 2nd metacarpal fractures. ✌️✌️ #handtherapy #occupationaltherapy #physiotherapy #handtherapygroup #handtherapist

This week I saw a client who came in with hypermobility in their hands and they were looking for ways to support their joints for participation in their work and extracurricular activities! I didn’t have a great setup for recording but you can see here how we can provide proprioceptive input to the hand and create an environment where the fingers can move safely, in a safe range of motion. Today we talked about how @silverringsplint as well as hand strengthening could be tools to incorporate into their weekly routine. It brings me so much joy to be able to see a patient completely change how they are able to move in the world. Truly finding my passion in #occupationaltherapy and truly focusing on #ehlersdanlos #hypermobile communities is lighting me up. If you are looking for more information, reach out! #handtherapy #

Judy C. Colditz, OTR, CHT, FAOTA explains, when faced with severe interossei muscle stiffness, the EDC muscle is not strong enough to hold the MP joints in the hyperextension position needed to perform high quality “active hook” exercise. Therefore, an MP joints extension orthotic is necessary. #handtherapist #bracelab #capitalhandtherapyassociation #handtherapy #chta

Just a casual day as a hand therapist. 🖐️ Early mobilization. Precise joint mechanics. Tendon glide work. Splint Sensory re-education when sensation needs to be retrained. Fine motor control when coordination needs refinement. Functional training when it’s time to return to daily life. Buttoning a shirt. Typing on a keyboard. Holding a cup without thinking about it. Hand therapy is detail-driven work. Movement, sensation, and function all matter. Small structures. Complex systems. Intentional progression. #HandTherapy #UpperExtremityRehab #EarlyMobilization #BridgeRehabPainClinic

Your patient has motion… but still can’t use their hand effectively. Hand function depends on multiple physical capacities, including tendon excursion, joint mobility, sensation, proprioception, strength, and endurance. In this case, the patient demonstrated available motion following trigger finger release, but continued to require progression in how she coordinated movement and managed force during task performance. While tendon excursion and motion are addressed separately, this phase focuses on restoring coordination and load tolerance for functional use. These graded activities were selected to systematically increase task demands: • Beginning with a lower-demand coordination task • Progressing to in-hand manipulation • Introducing load in a gravity-reduced position • Advancing to load against gravity The goal here is not to represent every component of recovery, but to highlight one part of the rehabilitation process: progressing functional use through increasing demands on coordination, control, and load tolerance. The April cohort for the Virtual Hand Therapy Fellowship is now enrolling. Designed for clinicians specializing in upper limb and hand rehabilitation, this program bridges foundational knowledge and clinical application to support advanced clinical reasoning. #HandTherapy #CertifiedHandTherapist #UpperExtremityRehab #OccupationalTherapy #PhysicalTherapy

Follow along with this gentle wrist movement exercise 👋 Today we’re working on wrist tenodesis and forearm rotation — movements that help encourage coordinated motion between the wrist, fingers and forearm. Small, controlled movements can be a helpful way to work on mobility and coordination in the hand and wrist. ⚠️ Please note: Exercises shown are for general education only and may not be suitable for everyone. If you’ve had an injury, surgery, or have pain, seek advice from a qualified hand therapist before trying new exercises. #handtherapy #wristexercises #handrehab #physiotherapy #occupationaltherapy

Stiff hands? Try this. If you’ve experienced a hand injury or noticed decreased fine motor control, these exercises can help improve mobility, coordination, and dexterity. • Digit Abduction/Adduction – Place your hand flat on a table. Spread your fingers apart, then bring them back together. (3 sets of 10, 2–3 times per day) • Digit Opposition – Touch each fingertip to your thumb one at a time. (3 sets of 10, 2–3 times per day) • Coin Drops – Pick up 2–3 coins at a time, then drop them one by one into a bowl or jar. As this becomes easier, increase the number of coins to further challenge fine motor control. Consistent practice can help improve hand strength, coordination, and precision for everyday tasks. #handtherapy #finemotorskills #handdexterity #upperextremityrehab #occupationaltherapy #injuryrecovery #movewell #physicaltherapy #MetroPT
