In high school, everyone told me that highlighting and rewriting my notes was “the most effective way to study” But I kept burning myself out spending hours “studying” only to forget them once I opened my exam. Once I got to Harvard, I was taught the Compression–Expansion Loop. It’s one of the most effective study methods that forces your brain to store and recall information with minimal time and effort. Here’s how it works 👇 1️⃣ Compression: After you study something, summarize it into 2–3 short sentences or one simple diagram. (Basically “zip” the info into its core idea.) 2️⃣ Expansion: A few hours or days later, try to rebuild the full explanation or process from memory (no notes or textbook) If you can expand it clearly, you actually understand it. If you can’t, you know exactly what to review. It’s how a lot of Harvard students handle insane amounts of material because trains their recall. 🧠 If you want a full breakdown of the BEST study systems I use to ace my Harvard classes, comment STUDY and I’ll send them to you! #UltimateIvyLeagueGuide #UltimateMentor #UILG

I used to think getting a higher GPA just meant studying longer. But the older I got, the more I realized that most students aren’t struggling because they’re “lazy” or “not smart enough.” They’re struggling because no one ever taught them how to study in a way their brain actually responds to. The difference between a 3.6, a 3.8, and a 4.0 student is almost never effort. It’s usually STRUCTURE. One of the methods that helped me the most at Harvard is something I call the 20–5 method: 1️⃣ Choose one clear objective for your 20-minute block. Example: – Understand how the Krebs cycle produces ATP – Rework 4 practice problems – Memorize the steps of a lab technique 2️⃣ Study for 20 minutes with everything open. Notes, textbook, slides…whatever you need. This is your input phase. 3️⃣ Then 5 minutes of closed-book recall. Try to remember: – What did I just learn? – Can I explain it in my own words? – Could I teach the main idea to someone else? – What pieces did I forget? Those five minutes matter more than the twenty. This is where your brain actually strengthens the memory. 4️⃣ Repeat the cycle a few times, then rest. What ends up happening is that you cover more in less time, and you retain it longer. The BIGGEST study mistake students make is thinking more hours equals better grades… This isn’t true, especially if you’re still using passive study habits. I’m a current Harvard student and what actually changed my GPA was understanding the science behind why these habits don’t work: ❌ Re-reading the textbook ❌ Highlighting everything ❌ Memorizing flashcards in the same order These fall into the familiarity trap. Your brain recognizes the information, but it cannot recall it under pressure, which is why so many students blank on exams. ✅ What actually works is an active recall technique called The 3 Layer Build: 1️⃣ Outline Layer: Write the topic at the top of a blank page. Add 3 to 5 bullet points you remember without notes. 2️⃣ Explain Layer: Choose one point and explain it in simple language, like you’re teaching a confused friend. Getting stuck shows you what to review. 3️⃣ Application Layer: Create one new example or practice problem using the idea in a different way. Solve it or explain it to build flexible recall. 📕If you want my full study system as a Harvard student, comment STUDY and I’ll send it to you! #ultimateivyleagueguide #ultimatementor #uilg

I’m currently a senior at Harvard, and one of the biggest differences I see isn’t intelligence… it’s how people study 😮📚 The students who struggle: – reread notes – highlight everything – study for hours with no direction The students who actually get results: – test themselves constantly – focus on weak spots, not what feels easy – practice like it’s the real exam When I stopped measuring my study sessions by time and started thinking about whether I was actually getting better, studying felt SOOO much easier and my grades improved!! 😊 Comment STUDY and I’ll send you all my most effective study hacks ✅🏆 #UltimateIvyLeagueGuide #UltimateMentor #UILG

Save these for later 💫 Struggling to stay awake while studying? These 5 science-backed strategies will help you study effectively even when you’re exhausted: Tip 1: Caffeine-Nap Trick A cup of coffee or tea followed by a 15-minute power nap will help you wake up feeling more alert. Tip 2: Five-Minute Rule Convince yourself to study for just five minutes. Once you start, you’ll likely find it easier to keep going. Tip 3: Active Recall > Rereading Passive studying won’t work when you’re tired. Instead of reading your notes again, use flashcards, try testing yourself, or explain concepts out loud. Tip 4: Switch Up Your Environment A small change—like moving to a different room or sitting by a window—can help reset your focus and improve concentration. Tip 5: Low-Effort Learning If reading feels impossible, let the information come to you. Listen to an audio summary or watch an educational video. Even a little studying is better than none, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Prioritize rest and take care of yourself! Some study methods for you guys💓 sorry I haven’t been posting much, doing my usual social media detox before exam starts! If you struggle with focusing or finding motivation just before exams, I recommend doing a full day or week of social media detox, just don’t use your phone, focus on other stuff like hobbies if you don’t want to study, although I recommend studying every day even if its for a few minutes. Anyways! I will be back posting more frequently starting next week. How is your exam preparation going?
